Chelsea's Russian owner Roman Abramovich says he is "giving trustees of Chelsea's charitable foundation the stewardship and care" of the club.

So does that mean he still owns the club but is attempting to protect it by putting under a trust?

Hands stewardship of Chelsea to the charitable trust. Isn’t Bournemouth also owned by an oligarch?

Is there such a thing as “stewardship” in company ownership? Does it make any difference or is he just hoping to hide away and go unnoticed?

From what I can see the Trust is a charity, so it can't be seized by UK Government. Since the club essentially owes him circa £2bn they'd be bankrupt if he had no control over its finances. I read he flew straight back to Russia on the night/morning of the invasion (someone tracked his private jet). It's not technically permanent from what I can see, but would he ever be allowed back in the UK?

He most certainly was a Putin supporter back when he was stealing from the Russian people.

Abramovich was the first Russian Oligarch of 35 to be named using Parliamentary Privilege in the House of Commons.

He must be in a very strange position. A Jew who has ties to Israel who has previously supported Putin who is currently calling Ukraine “Nazis” whilst acting in their image.
I would think it is to take himself out of the limelight and let the club get on with football until this is all resolved.
It could be a cynical play, but I imagine he is very conflicted at the moment.

He wouldn’t be flying back to Russia if he wasn’t still big mates with Vlad the impaler.

    Yes he did.
He might have legitimate business interests there that require his attention? I assume he got his money from business? And by that I mean businesses that will be affected by sanctions.

Micah Richards’ responding like 95% of us.

Clever use of the word ‘currently’ as well, suggesting it’s a very temporary thing. Essentially it’s PR spin and nothing really changes.

I’m sure he’s got business interests, as they were acquired from the state with no outlay I don’t think they’re very “legitimate”

The Liverpool fans will have a field day at Wembley tomorrow. They'll be making up the chants as we speak!
