    Very interesting. Sounds like an agreement that everyone was happy to sign because it removed some nuclear weapons but in reality had no binding obligations either on the west or Russia. Ukraine whilst in theory had a huge nuclear arsenal, it was basically unusable and unmaintainable for the new country.

    I still think the west should provide planes for the Ukraine air force. From the latest ravings of Putin, we've already declared war on Russia with our economic sanctions...

    Russia didn't need a face saver, they weren't actually that interested in putting missiles into Cuba, that was just a lever, what they wanted was American nuclear missiles taking out of Turkey which they got.

    I listened on youtube to a former senior MI6 man addressing the Oxford Union, the top and bottom of it, is that no-one thought he would ever actually invade the whole country.

    I'm not sure he can keep those areas given the battering they have taken and the way the Ukrainian resistance has been armed. Ukrainians held large protests in occupied cities yesterday, I think Putin has galvanised Ukrainian national identity and they will refuse to give an inch. Think he overestimated how easy it would be after his relatively painless annexation of Crimea.

    How long do we just sit back and let this continue? When do we start to accuse every Western leader of weak leadership? I don't know the answer to these questions but something has to give at some point. Putin is simply murdering innocent people on a daily basis. I won't shared Edward Wong's tweet as the images are too disturbing to force on people, but if you've seen it you'll know what I'm talking about.

    It can't continue to be this way, day after day. As a minimum enforce the no fly zone over Ukraine.

    I reckon by this time next week there will be.

    Even sooner if Russia keeps shelling the fleeing Ukrainians.

    Pressure on NATO will be too great.

    And then the question will be, why wasn't it sooner? Why did the pressure have to become too great, and what lives could have been saved with swifter action?

    Can anyone tell me why the UN can't send a peacekeeping force in? I mean I get why we can't send NATO in, but surely Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq weren't NATO members either?

    The UN Security Council has to agree it and has Russia is on the council they can block it.

    Not sure about the feasibility or the UN rules about what constitutes a peace keeping situation. It's a good thought though. I think any UN forces would have to be from non NATO countries though to avoid the predictable Russian response.

    It's really time that ruling was overturned. It renders the UN virtually toothless.

    A country (including permanent members of the UNSC) can be expelled from the UN for persistent violations of UN principles.

    I guess it would then fall to the legal brains to prove that Russia is doing that.

    Russia legally shouldn't even be in the United Nations as they never applied. They wrongly adopted the USSR's seat at the table but they're not the same place so shouldn't have done so.

    They should be kicked out and to hell with the consequences. He can't attack the entire world

    Catch 22 as even rule changes can be blocked .
    The peace keeping forces were virtually useless in Bosnia due to the restrictions Russia put in them .
    They were virtually by standers to Serb atrocities with many suffering PTSD to this day and a Netherlands deposition taken prisoner .

    It won't stop at Ukraine, like it didn't stop at Crimea, like it didn't stop at Georgia, like it didn't stop at Chechnya. If he takes Ukraine he'll invade another territory. And again he'll claim if the West involves itself he'll nuke us. So after we've let him have Ukraine, doing nothing, do we let him have Poland and do nothing? And Romania and Slovakia? And then Germany? At what point do we make a stand? Never and just let him have the whole of Europe? Or wait until millions are already dead before making a stand? If you're waiting for an internal coup it aint going to happen. Not without the West already engaging him.

    You stand up to a bully, you don't just let him walk all over you and everyone around you. If you do, he won't stop. Ever.

    Take him out. Now. All those around him, too weak to to stand up to him when he looks strong, will strip his bones as soon as we show he's really very weak. End him now.

    I highly doubt he's got anywhere near that amount that are functioning. Look at the state of every other piece of equipment Russia has, it's falling to bits. But I don't think that's really the point. I don't think he can take on the whole world without ending his own life and ending Russia and I don't think he's that stupid

    Then it just becomes NATO more or less which imo have a better intervention policy as in Kosovo etc .
    Think the last time UN came together was in Korea although I could be wrong on that .
    If we kick countries out it probably stops being UN so not sure what the answer is tbh.
