I fear it can. In 1939 France and Britain signed a treaty whereby they pledged to come to Poland’s defence if that country was attacked by the Nazis. That September the Poles resisted for over four weeks. Britain and France, despite their obligations did nothing. 15 days into the invasion the French, with the largest army in Europe were obliged by the treaty to attack Germany from the west. Polish Ambassador in Paris: “Do you realize every hour you delay the attack on Germany… means the death of thousands of Polish men, women and children?” Reply of The French Foreign Minister: “Do you then want the women and children of Paris to be massacred?” The French did launch the Saar offensive. A few miles into Germany they decided to call it off. The British in reality could do very little (the treaty was an attempt to call Hitler’s bluff) but what little they could do was vetoed in the House of Commons. Plans to bomb German ammunition dumps in the Black Forest were rejected as they were “private property.” The Times perhaps summed up the mood of western nations best. “In the agony of their martyred land the Poles will perhaps in some degree be consoled by the knowledge they have the sympathy, indeed the reverence, not only of their allies in western Europe but of all civilized people throughout the globe.” We have no treaty with Ukraine. We’re 10 days in. This is a dictator who will resort to barbarian tactics to achieve his goal. This is war on the Eastern Front. If not one Ukrainian survives, not one building is left standing, it won’t matter to The Butcher of Moscow. In his warped mind he’ll have won. We’re looking for a miracle.
Because I can’t see what he aims to get out of this war at all, I find it difficult to see him being rational if his position worsens over the coming days/weeks/months.
Cheers, I thought as much. But didn't the UN send troops to Syria even though Russia was very vocal about not doing so?
Some people are so blinded by the mainstream narrative that the only possible explanation they can come up with is that Putin is evil or mentally deranged. People forget that Putin is devoutly Christian and wouldn't want to take human lives without there being a justifiable cause. I believe that history will show that Putin was the actually the good guy rather than the evil monster.... I suppose time will tell one way or the other when the dust has settled. Remember just because you watched it on the BBC or read it in The Times doesn't necessarily make it 'true'. There are two sides to every story.
Not sure but it would be under very restrictive mandate probably medical aid etc similar to Bosnia . The Bosnian Serbs taunted the UN soldiers knowing the restrictions the Russians and its allies on the council had placed upon them ie observation only . The move made out Russia was sending UN soldiers in but the restrictions made them next to useless as far as the peacekeeping agenda went .
Christian justification for taking lives throughout history is hardly a strong basis justification of someone's action. I don't belive Putin is mentally ill, and from his own perspective I understand the reasoning he will have made.
I think he's a bit like a lot of British people to be honest; trying to recreate the glories of the past. In Putin's case it's the recreation of the Soviet Empire in Nigel Farage and Jacob Rees Smug's case it's the British Empire. They're just going about it in different ways; one way is more destructive than the other...

Time was the judge of it when all your deranged ramblings about Donald trump overthrowing the American government was proven to be horse **** wasn't it?
People are dying every day in Ukraine and he thinks it's funny to come on here to have a laugh and a wind up about it. It's disgusting
Im not laughing about anything. I'm as against war and the loss of human life as anyone on this message board. I'm simply stating that people don't go to war without a very valid reason and putting forward evidence of what those reasons might be. Since Russia Times was banned around the world there isn't much getting out from the other side so perhaps I will provide that service to stop this place turning into a mindless echo chamber.
