Likely starting 11 Crawley Lees Root Lawrence Bairstow Stokes Foakes Woakes Overton Leach Wood I know the Windies.aren't the toughest test nation however I'm struggling to see our bowling line up taking 20 wickets in the match. (Especially with dropping Anderson and Broad and Robinson injured)
Agree with likely team except Stokes may be above Bairstow. The only contention is whether to play Mahmood instead of Leach but I think we’ve got to have a proper spinner. It will be a shame seeing Woakes and Overton open the bowling when , we’ve the likes of Broad, Anderson, Robinson and Archer not or unable to play. As you say, it seems unlikely we can bowl them out twice on their own ground. Wood needs to keep fit for certain !
I cannot believe we are planning on going into the first test of an away series with that bowling lineup. Only Wood deserves his spot. Lessons clearly haven't beed learned. I can accept them dropping Broad and Anderson to give young lads a go, but to replace them with Woakes and Overton is unfathomable.
If you're a bowler and you want to impress the England selectors, don't work on your pace, accuracy or skills. Work on your batting.
Is Stokes playing as a batsman only? Reason I ask, I have seen talk of Mahmood, but we would be pace-heavy if Stokes is actually bowling.
Wouldn't surprise me, Root seems to fancy himself over Leach as a bowler. Which begs the question of why even take Parkinson if he's below Leach in the pecking order.
We must have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to spinners, when we can disregard someone with an FC average of less than 24. Yet, if the selectors thought he could score 15-20, he'd walk into the team.
When was the last time we had flamboyant attacking openers with a half decent technique? Trescothick and Strauss? We always seem to have one extreme or the other since them. We get Keaton Jennings who had the shots but no defence. Then we have the other extreme. Stoneman, Hameed, Burns and Sibley who take half the day to get 12.
Cook wasn"t too bad , in fact he has never been replaced & he was flamboyant with an excellent technique
Just thinking of some bad bowlers over the years for England given our current expected line up for tomorrow. Here's a few. Martin McCague Norman Cowans Derek Pringle Phil Defeitas Simon Kerrigan Chris Silverwood Samit Patel Ian Salisbury
I loved Norman Cowans, he was superb for a couple of seasons but hampered by Injuries . Phil DeFraitas was a good all round cricketer. The rest were pap.
Patel was always a very good spinner and a fast scoring batsman… ideal for limited over cricket but he refused to lose weight. He is still plying his trade globally in other countries and getting well paid. Can I add Dernbach to your list ?
