Not seen this posted elsewhere. Preston fans have been told that they can't use any pubs in Barnsley when they visit in April. I know we don't have many (if any) designated away pubs usually, so is this just an overreaction to what SYP say to all visiting clubs fans. Or is this a hard line approach off the back of trouble we've had with Preston fans in the past? I know a minority caused grief in town prior to a game a few years ago. https://www.lancs.live/sport/football/football-news/barnsley-pne-championship-efl-police-23375439
Call me boring, but I'd be quite happy if, at some point in the future a decision was made that prevent away fans going to games. Literally solves a whole raft of problems.
You could say that about all fans. In fact, if you got rid of the ridiculous excess of football altogether, would the world be a better place for it?
Isn't there a danger of this being counter productive? No designated away pubs could lead to smaller groups of away fans, going to, or trying to go into various pubs dotted around the town. At least away pubs allows for some segregation.
I don't agree with segregation of pubs at all, barring around Wembley stadium. Over 90% of Preston fans will come to the game, have a few pints before hand, and get back on the train after without any bother or hassle whatsoever. The ones wanting to cause trouble, will do so regardless of whether we've designated them a particular pub or not. If anything, telling them they can't do something is only likely to further cause trouble. Its a minority who cause bother, and its the majority being punished for it. I can see similar sanctions being put on our fans when we play Huddersfield in a few weeks, after what happened prior to the cup game, despite the fact that the perpetrators of that particular incident appear to have been dealt with.
It's not that I'm in a Monday morning grouchy type mood or anything today, but seriously, are supporters who don't go to away games calling for away supporters to be banned from attending away games? Which then morphed in to banning football supporters completely? If I never wanted to attend an away game again I wouldn't advocate for the banning of supporters. Some of the most memorable days of my life have been spent watching the Reds in far flung places of the UK - with zero issues. I'd want people to keep on experiencing that even if it was no longer for me.
I've been to plenty of away games. Though obviously attending football at all now is not something that's personally feasible.
Fulham fans were in the old number 7 before the game, nobody stopping them buying drinks, no trouble, the way it should be
What is the legal argument being used to stop supporters going for a beer prior to the match? It's ludicrous. Equally ludicrous is the sense of territorial anxiety some folk get when opposition supporters drink in 'their' pub. It's one reason I don't attend many away matches. I'm a 50 year old academic, I'm fighting nobody, yet still I'm treated as a threat by police and certain groups of away supporters. Bonkers.
Didn’t the Police say that for the Boro game but they seemed to take no notice and still went in the East Dene and a few pubs round town
Is it Preston fans who dress up for the final away match of the season and remember fellow supporters who died during the season?
They were pre booked in at the East Dene. 5 coaches. They set up a can bar on dance floor to aliviate the inevitable bar que. The other pre booked coach party went to the West Green Club. Both with police consent.
'Is this a library. Is this a library' sings the cleaner mopping one of the gangways from the boxing the night before.
Ok I knew a couple of Boro lads who were in their car that went in East Dene , I must admit I’ve never looked for away friendly pubs on my travels I’ve just assumed any pub serving real ale would be friendly to anyone wanting to go in
Same was asked of Huddersfield and I guess other teams as well. It's a awful thing to ask. It makes Barnsley as a place look backwards and unwelcoming. Fans should be able to drink wherever they want. I doubt most pubs are bothered about what the police say on social media. Huddersfield fans were in plenty of our town centre pubs. In Silkstone Inn they were making a din with all their chants and it added to the atmosphere.
I've been to hundreds of away games where I've never felt the necessity to set foot inside a pub at all. It's amazing. You can still enjoy the match without having a skinful of ale.
