    I’m only just catching up. Taps were pouring non-stop at the Hotel, Restaurant and Pub Show at London ExCel today. Supposed to be an opportunity for networking and sales but people just treated our stand like a BrewDog Bar!

    Mustn’t complain. But I am. My feet hurt and got it all to do again tomorrow when I’m meant to be an innocent observer.

    Funny how peoples beer journeys meander and evolve.

    I was never that bothered about beer when i used to go out at weekends in my younger days. European city breaks brought a bit of a difference with Budvar then becoming a bit of a staple, moreso as it was the main beer at my favourite gastropub at the time that did seriously good food. I then did a tour of Fullers with my missus. And though not a huge shift, I was pleasantly surprised and started to try other things. The biggest change was then going to Brussels not long after and discovering that world of beer.

    I'd say I saw brewdog as more of a fall back rather than a go to. I recall the first one we went to up round Camden way I think that was really small and we were the only ones in. Had some lunch and it was truly awful. Can't recall the beers but they were ok and given it was so far away from us, it wasn't really a place we aimed for.

    We really started to get into beer more when the wave of local london breweries and following the timeout reviews for places that had craft beer and starting to up their game and several of our local bars started to be more adventurous. Then the tap rooms followed and Bermondsey Beer Mile and by which time we'd been to Tallinn and discovered Pohjala, so after that we started visiting places specifically that had interesting brewers. Oh, and numerous trips to Bristol to sample the huge array of brewers developing in that part of the world.

    The sad thing that I perceive at the minute, from very fleeting evidence, is that Brexit has had an impact on what beers are being carried in the UK. Not a bad thing in some ways, but the craft beers on offer seem very much UK ones. We've been to a literal handful of places in the last 2 years and where we'd expect to see brewers from the continent, instead we slightly more run of the mill UK options.

    I've not seen Dugges, Pohjala, To Ol, Omnipollo or Amundsen for example. Which is a shame, but I suspect the hoops created by Brexit make a casual barrel from Europe a fairly expensive thing to do now.

    If you like craft beer I would heartily recommend most things by Pollys or Deya

    I think punk ipa is pretty decent and regularly available. Tend not to drink lager any more and sometimes punk ipa is the only option for a decent ipa

    I must say, I've struggled to find a better DIPA than what Deya and Verdant knock out.

    Punk IPA is the UK’s #1 Craft Beer. That’s factually by the way, not just my opinion. The recipe has changed over the years as the beer has moved from 6% in cask to 5.2% on keg.

    Has it deteriorated? I’d disagree. It’s quality and consistency is outstanding, but taste buds have definitely moved on which is half the reason the notion of it ‘not being as good as it used to’ comes from. I get that. But we forget that when it burst on to the scene and trailblazed the beer industry, we had little if anything to compared it to, rather than now where we have many a great brewery brewing some ridiculously good stuff. Can you tell I work in marketing yet?

    It’s a really solid beer. Doesn’t set the world a light for the craft beer geeks but is always a dependable safe option out the fridge or on the bar, and not everyone is at the peak of their beer journey.

    Hazy Jane is the one though. How we get that to be so good and consistent, at such scale, is just phenomenal. New England IPAs simply aren’t easy to brew and can be all over the place.

    Would also recommend getting your lips around Planet Pale if you see it in a pub near you. Feedback so far is great for the job it’s trying to do - 4.3% abv, superbly balanced and accessible, just the right punchiness of bitterness, and automatically makes you reach for a refill. Exactly what a pub pint should do rather than this eternal crusade for something different and better - which lets be honest often leaves you disappointed.

    That doesn’t happen without BrewDog leading the way in 2007. For all the controversies at the moment (fair or unfair), all those brewery owners are positive about BrewDog and it’s impact on how they got where they are today.

    Different versions available I think? I’ve got a can of 6.5% at home and we were knocking out a 19.2 oz ‘Pint Can’ the other week at 6.5%

    All allegations though and nothing proven, with an official complaint launched with Ofcom as the BBC presented some ‘stories’ without the evidence submitted by BrewDog to the contrary. Just flat out ignored it.

    Also the world’s first carbon negative brewery, putting its money where it’s mouth is on sustainability rather than just talking a good game. Whilst you search for the BBC Doc make sure you also search for the United for Ukraine beer where all revenue (not profit) goes to supporting that country, and the I Am Whole campaign launched recently with the lead singer from Rizzlekicks to support mental health.

    Never said that it did either. Was a bit of a play down on personal preference, which is perfectly fine. I certainly don’t expect everyone to like BrewDog or the bars - but it has opened the doors to every positive comment made about craft beer in this thread which was the aim of James and Martin from day one. That part I can admire even if recent stories are unsavoury at times.

    I am a true lover of Brewdog and craft beer in general, as you know mate, and I can definitely say Hazy Jane is one of the best mainstay beers I’ve ever had.
    For some different options for people, I would recommend, obviously Magic Rock, the Black Sheep Brewery has some good pubs with some quirky brews knocking about, and Roosters, which has a brilliant tap room in my current hometown, Harrogate. Brew York are also putting out consistently good and interesting beer and their tap room is absolutely outstanding with some top snap to go with it.

    I was merely sharing my beer journey which started with Fullers and Trappiste beers, which were definitely pre 2007 ;-)
