I thought DePfeffel was angling for an invite once he knew Biden had been invited so he could do his pretend international statesmen skit, knowing full well he wouldn't be invited and likely in due course, play a bit more EU culture war... just in advance of council elections that would likely hasten his exit should the results be devastating.

He's a vile little man and I can't wait for him to be gone. I'm not sure a British PM has caused such damage in such a short space of time.

 

I refer you to Earl Russell. He just let a large number of (at the time) British people starve to death while exporting food to sell on the market *and* is one of the main reasons you no longer hear of the Whigs as a political party in this country. He then had a second go with the Liberals and nearly repeated that trick.

That is one of the reasons that I believe we won't have any "Conservative Party" MPs in a decade. Brexit, Covid, and (now) the cost of living crisis are too toxic so they will end up having to rebrand to continue (coincidentally its the 350th anniversary of the Tory Party in a few years so that would be my guess).

I'm really not sure you know. At the moment we're looking through the prism of Johnsons tenure. It's purposefully intended to create culture wars and divide and conquer. And we see that such an approach has been far more successful than we'd like to admit, in sections of an electorate that don't benefit from the party they vote for.

If we have a change of head at the govt and stick say Sunak there, that would be more palatable for the wavering tory voters who are disillusioned. Though you create the cleave with the far right UKIP/BXP/whatever its called this week party voters.

The problem is that the government have many quarters that help them find cover for their choices. Brexit, Covid and cost of living will all be explained away. And the war in Ukraine is another external factor that can be ducked behind and give the illusion of truth.

I think the only way we see a paring back of control for the right and far right is to change the voting system. And the only way that happens is if the centre and left unite to topple as many tory seats as possible at the next GE and apply the same zeal to protect future democracy that the tories have applied in doing the exact opposite.

This further goes to show though that not even Boris Johnson, who was heavily involved in the leave campaign, fully understood what Britain leaving the EU actually meant.

I've just sent this email to my (tory) MP Heather Wheeler;-

Something has been troubling me since the events of last week with regard to P&O. As you know, all their British staff were instantly dismissed while their replacement agency staff waited on the quayside in mini-buses. As you no doubt also know, the agency staff were largely foreign workers, dare I say migrants. What's been bothering me is, how did these people get into the UK despite our world-beating, points-based immigration system? Has Boris Johnson been playing tennis with Peter Hebblethwaite by any chance?

They have a health system which, when a game of football on the beach which I watched (in 2006) resulted in one of the lads breaking his leg, the rest of the lads started a collection to allow him to be treated in a hospital. Without money, they wouldn't even have seen him.

Has anyone noticed that it is just the British workers who have been replaced. P & O employ a good number of French workers whose jobs for now appear safe. Farridge has said this is not the Brexit benefit we voted for - for once he is right - pity he didn't listen to project fear who told us that workers rights would be at threat

No it isn't. Every other sentence from the Ukranian president mentions the support from the UK. Putin singled us out in a speech as well so we must be hurting him more than most.

Meanwhile the EU lag behind because of their massive reliance on Russian gas. We led the way in helping with defensive weapons & training forces, when the likes of Germany whimpered and sent a few helmets over.

If anything on the Ukraine, we have shown how quickly we can act free of the EU shackles who are basically talking about 2027 before they stop funding the Russian invasion.
