Finally. Now for the other stands but there are so many names to choose from. Ronnie Glavin, Neil Redfearn, Eric Winstanley - the obvious three I suppose.
Do you reckon he's thinking of Dave? It's very unfair how Barnsley fans remember him. He was a half decent player brought into the squad as back up at a time when we had the most talented players in our history. He wasn't on their level but he wasn't supposed to be, he was cheap, only to be used if we had injuries/suspensions. We've had dozens and dozens of far worse players since who were first choice. John Regis, on the other hand, proper hero. 4x400m 1991 Tokyo - I'd have no complaints if we named a stand after him.
It was a bizarre bit of business, though. As I recall Andy Rammell and some cash went the other way. Rammell was younger and with a reasonable scoring record in the second tier, so it was seen as paying for a downgrade! Regis did nothing to endear himself, scoring only one solitary goal in a red shirt. Further, if you don't want to be remembered as shît, don't do something really, really memorably shît that still gets mentioned 25 years later. That's my advice.
Not wanting to get into an argument but it was the other way. We got 200 grand and Regis for Rammel. We basically got Regis chucked in for free. I think the South Riding scans are still available as a link from this site and they will confirm this.
I had a feeling it was a £200k deal but Regis was valued at £100k (incredibly). But you're right that we got cash as part of the deal. I thought Regis was so bad that opinion of him descended into parody. A bit like M'Voto.
Ok fair enough. I remembered it as being us who paid but I'll take your word for it. I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again. It was me who scanned all the South Ridings in but I can't be arsed to go check. Even the other way around it strikes as poor business, even if we have signed people even less able since. Unfortunately, Dave Regis never got the opportunity to score a legendary goal to counteract his legendary miss and so he'll always be remembered for that one moment.
If you compare Regis to Liddell and Payton and Wilkinson and Hendrie then obviously he's nowhere near. And then we got Ward and Fjortoft and Hristov and the talent is just phenomenonal. If we compared him to Victor and the Belgians and that Austrian kid with the fancy tattoos and god knows what else we've had, I don't think he'd fair too badly.
I think we've got to judge players at the time they play as football changes so much, and fitness in particular. Could you imagine him playing a high press? What really went against him was that he was the replacement for Rammell. And "get Regis on" just didn't have the same ring to it!
