    This, 100%

I grew up going to a venue in Peterborough pretty much on a monthly basis, formed the basis of my musical tastes from the age of 16 or so

Was genuinely devastated when I found out it was going to cease to exist

Sure there are other venues, but its not the same

The Astoria in London is another; what an incredible venue that was. Absolutely cannot just be moved somewhere else. It just doesn't work like that

Life is what you make it with the people you surround yourself to make memories. You don't need a particular place to do that.

We had the same in Huddersfield where Parish in recent times couldn't hold on to their long term venue where many well known acts had performed due to a issue with the owner of the building. They are now in a bigger and smarter venue so whilst pushed out are in a much better place now going forward.

How often do you go to see live music in these types of venues?

Why would anyone want a bigger venue?

There is nothing better than seeing your favourite band in a tiny venue. I've stopped seeing certain bands because they only play arenas and the like nowadays. Not enjoyable in the slightest

It's akin to all these clubs playing in idetikit bowl stadiums. Lifeless. Corporate nothingness

I've seen the Foos at Manc Apollo, the GMEX, The MEN Arena and Old Trafford CC... hands down best gig was the Apollo.

Most of my favourite gigs have either been at places such as the Brudenell or at Manc Academies etc

There’s something magical about some venues and this is one of them. I went to the Royal Albert Hall at the weekend and it’s a similar thing there albeit different ‘vibe’ and less smelly toilets. (Mis)Spent many a student night at the Leadmill and saw arctic monkeys in one of their greatest gigs here, amongst loads of other gigs. Engrained in my musical education and youth, as it will be with many others. You can’t rebuild it.

So many memories. Pulp, Pixies, Radiohead, Manics, Primal Scream, Arcade Fire, White Stripes and so many others. Have tickets for Sea Power later this month and will undoubtedly take in a couple of more gigs later this year. On the flipside, first met our gert there...

Bricks and mortar? F*ck all philistines!!!

It’s probably the only historical gig venue left in Sheffield. There’s always gonna be pop ups, like abbeydale social, or Sidney & Matilda, but in terms of established venues, I can’t think of any others? Obviously Sheffield arena, O2 doesn’t count. They’re the gig equivalent of Red Bull FC. It would be devastating for Sheffield and independent music, for it to disappear.

    Interesting.

On face value it looks like they may be looking to align all their venues together and run them the same. Therefore potentially they are saying nothing will change apart from the management. Time will tell.

They bought the freehold only a few years ago, so yesterday’s news wouldn’t have been a surprise.

@dreamboy3000 I'll assume you dodging this question means that you don't actually go to gigs, hence your lack of empathy and understanding.

Saw Thin Lizzy there a few years ago; fantastic, despite no Phil, obviously.

Octagon's a great venue but obtaining tickets can be difficult. o2 is pretty soulless, but I'm tempted to get tickets for Public Service Broadcasting's October gig.

Probably because students get first chance of buying. Haven't been for a while, could be different now.
