George Kerr was a great player and something special at the level we were playing. All tricks and flicks, and goals as well.
Steve Mokone was a South African and our first black player who I don’t remember seeing much of although he was with us around 1964-65 and I was watching the Reds by then.

Jimmy Baxter 547, then Harry Hough 574, though I saw Hough before Baxter. Baxter rejoined us late in his career after starring for us earlier before a move to Preston. He was an extremely skilful inside forward and played in the 1954 FA Cup Final for Preston.

George Kerr was my favourite player at the time and just as you describe him. I used to imagine I was Kerr when playing football in the school yard at Holgate, while my mates who played with me imagined themselves to be Jimmy Greaves and Denis Law, respectively.

Made me chuckle that 'Dangerous Brian' (O'Callaghan) is 999. Ring Brian incase of emergencies. It'd have to be a catastrophe of epic proportions to dial that number.

Also had a few pints with Colace on Saturday night. He's going to get his tattooed.

No Bobby Charltons there, like in Kes? Good on you for choosing a Barnsley player though. I was a keeper so I suppose I was Alan Hill at that time

Not sure of the full lineup but I was one of the 12,260 who saw us beat Hereford, 16th April 1979.

Saunders scored 1 I think . My first game

Probably 654 Eric Brookes, although I definitely did not see his debut.

548 Roy Cooling lived at the top of Rose Grove when I was growing up there, although, I never knew about his Barnsley FC connection until much later on. He played cricket for Mitchell’s and Darfield MW in the 60s at the cricket ground that is now Plumpton Pond.

Didn’t we have a black goalkeeper called Nusum at around this time? He never made it into the first team.

Not sure of mine. My first game was in 1977 or 1978. A 1-1 draw at home v Huddersfield where Neil Warnock and I think Graham Pugh got sent off

I would bow to your knowledge, but I do know that Bell became one of my first favourite players that season.
Then Ronnie arrived and everyone else became a nobody :)

The Hereford game was on the afternoon of Easter Monday.. We'd beaten Hartlepool 1-0 at home and lost 3-2 at Port Vale in the others that holiday weekend.

Hmm, moot point. Swarthy rather than black I would say

You are probably right about Bell. Deffo 16th, yes, and 20 years to the day after that, my first born arrived - now a Reds supporter himself, no matter how much I tried to persuade him to take up crotchet or cooking. Not sure why I thought Saunders scored as he is a player I remember little of. I do remember it was Grimsby shortly after, and I was desperate to go, but I was back for the next home match vs Aldershot. So my first two games were against towns with a military connection.

Maybe it was this pic from the BBC archives that made me think he'd scored? I'm sure I remember the match was played in colour :)

We lost 2-0 at Grimsby and beat Aldershot at home 2-0.
