When we are relegated to League 1. What are your thoughts on appointing Daniel Stendel and go again for promotion.(assuming he would take the job)He was an enthusiastic manager who was loved by many(if not all) of the fans and now has the experience of the league. I would back him
Last time he had a squad miles too good for L1. He had the firepower to play attacking high press football. Instead of Moore and Woodrow he’d likely have Vic and Cole. Not sure it’d be quite the same somehow.
Last time he had a squad that strong people on the BBS could have got us promoted. He's done absolutely nothing since flopping at every club he's been at. No thanks.
Yes, he's been amazing everywhere since he left us It's a no from me, not taking anything away from what he did for us though. That was a brilliant season to witness.
It’s a no from me, well liked manager who did well for us , but by the end flaws were there. Given that he has failed at every club since I think we should remember the good times fondly but not go back.
Loved that season, but we easily had a top 2-3 squad and should have been promoted. No from me this time.
Agree with the comments about the strength of the squad he had ect. On the other hand given we will likely appoint another unknown, unproven foreign coach from a much lower standard of football I'm torn on saying no because we'll probably get a lot worse in.
Its a big no from me & I think we missed the boat with not going back for Val when he became available, now I would be confident of getting back if he was in charge ,but alas that ship has sailed
I think after the event it was widely seen that we had a very good team. After relegation, the pitchforks were out and the squad quality was questioned. We had 2 weeks Cauley and questioning whether his DNA matched Phil Gridelets. Kiefer Moore was hardly held in high regard at the time. We also had Thiam who was heavily criticised. Adam Davies had experienced a dreadful season where some thought he should have been replaced. Pinnock had hardly played, Lindsay was thought as too slow. Mowatt had been shipped out on loan, McGeehan had hardly been prolific and Potts was one for the boo boys. And Cavare and Pinillos were hardly flavour of the month, even for their coaches. And of course, early doors, Bradshaw left who many thought would be integral at that level given his work rate. If we go back to the actual time, the opening day 4-0 was something of a welcome surprise, and we can't suddenly rewrite that Stendel was suddenly lucky to have them all. He moulded them into a very very good team. If he'd had half the backing Struber and Ismael had, I suspect he might have done pretty well at Championship level too.
On the basis of lack of alternatives ( that our owners would look at) I would say yes - he had a plan!
Not always true - Nathan Jones at Luton seems to be doing ok and Fergie Jnr has had success when returing to Peterboro as long as they were in the 3rd division. Its not realistic though and not going to happen and if we were dreaming Id have Val back rather than Stendell Just hoping we dont stick with Poya - he may do OK in L1 but Im not a fan of negative football
We hear this 'never go back' a lot. Look at Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton... Can't cite Danny Wilson every time as a reason not to 'go back.' And I'd argue that a Stendel return after a Poya exit would be a giant leap forward if anything. Opinions eh?!
There’s definitely a few re-writing history. I remember posting that I only felt we were a holding midfielder away from going up automatic & loads were telling me we were far weaker than that. I was satisfied when I saw how good Dougall was.
I suppose the whole ‘don’t go back’ argument depends on the alternatives. I’m sure some saying this would be happy to go back if the alternatives had the experience of Poya. If the alternatives were managers who’d done well in leagues 1 & 2 then it’d be different.
It's not going back really though is it, Stendel and BFC have moved on. We have a new challenge and there's no reason why Stendel couldn't do a job for us again, with a different team 5 years down the line. I don't think the 'don't go back' mentality is one-size-fits-all.
