Time to face the facts that we are no longer a club that can compete in the championship long term like we previously did. Football has changed we dont have the owners, the ground, the fan base, the academy or a core of players to sustain a decent push. Last season was a one off and I doubt we will for a long time be able to recruit the quality we had in 2016 / 2017, credit to who was doing the recruitment back then. Im not sure who would want to come in and buy us, our prvious successful times were having local owners but local Barnsley fan owners with enough money to compete now in the championship i presume are very thin on the ground. I would like Poya, any player that wants to leave and the loan players to leave now and lets build a side from good coaching, using our academy players and players who want to play for us not for us to be a stepping stone. If that means a long period in league 1 then so be it. Im very disappointed with how our team has been coached this season because i am sure the squad is better than it has shown
The problem is the owners want every player or coach (no matter if they are one of our own or brought to the club)to be a possible profit so they can rinse n repeat
And yet we finished 5th last season. And have spent much more time in it than out this century. We should be able to but not with our current business model it needs to be done much smarter and I don’t think we have the systems in place now.
The facts are that we could have stayed in this league another season at least. Blackpool scored 6 goals today! But no, we let all our key staff go, don't add any experience to our midfield and appoint not one but two useless managers.
Forelock tugging nonsense. Luton and Coventry have similar budgets. We competed more than adequately last season. The happy to have a club mob are part of the problem.
Absolute ********. We can compete because its 11 V 11. Your pathetic negative attitude playing down the club's possible ambitions harms the club so much
We know we have to give something more to compete. Effort, overachieving etc. We see clubs like ours doing it season in season out. It can work if the owners give it a chance. if owners have priorities on resale value over on field competitiveness then that chance is …. No Chance.
We don't generate enough money as a town. We can't afford the calibre of players we used to get. We need to rely now on excellent coaching and a make Oakwell an intimidating place for opposing teams to come. We have neither of those things The owners are secondary to the above, they could pump £40m in transfers but without the coaching and fan base we would just end up £40m in debt. The atmosphere at Blackpool from the home fans was fantastic, the coaching at Coventry and Luton is superb. I want these owners gone but I want a motivating coach and supporters more.
Load of rubbish. No reason we can’t do what Burnley, Luton, Blackburn, Preston, Millwall, Huddersfield and many more do. Similar attendances.
It’s a load of **** that we can,t compete at that level we can if we had a decent owners and a manager that know what they are doing. Like someone said look at Coventry,Blackpool,Huddersfield they were skint look what a good manager brings.
More self pitying nonsense. Of course we can and should compete. The owners are the only ones who can actually change things either by reviewing their business plan which is failing at all the clubs they own or buggering off.
We can’t compete in the championship, not because of budgets, but because of rank bad decision making from the board.
There’s plenty of clubs in this division we should be competing with - but we’ve competed with none, and that’s nothing to do with attendences or size of the town.
Whilst that probably is true, this disgraceful season is mainly on the owners. It just did not have to be this way. Carry on in the style we employed last season and I've no doubt we'd have been mid table, if not higher, giving us further base on which to build. We had the players, we could have got the coach, these locusts have ruined EVERYTHING due to greed. I agree with the rest of your post.
Much smarter are we getting Jesus in to share out the 5 loafs and fishes that our 10000 fan base gets us in way of money to pay championship quality wages?
We finished 5th last season and sold 10k season tickets. We can compete at this level. Now our owners won't even engage the fans. So you may be right the new attendance levels will make it hard to compete at this level. Of course we won't be at thisnlevel next season and on both issues the ownership only have themselves to blame.
