Like many on here and at Oakwell the talk of a new coach has been a high talking point for many. I’m not the one to normally say I want X, Y or even z coach but I do want certain things. Many on here likely will not agree as my friends haven’t either when I’ve listed them. mainly a former coach is to blame for that. Are the other coaches realistic? I haven’t a clue. I want a young coach with high standards for discipline. Someone the young group of players will respect but also have a slight fear of. I want a coach that has a strong style of play and will not alter from that because a few dinosaurs in the crowd moaned. Now to the names. Lee Johnson, I likely Lee Johnson whilst he was at Oakwell and whilst some didn’t like him moving I understood it at the time. Michael Carrick. I did listen to an interview where he said he wanted to become a head coach. Would he be realistic? Also John Terry for the reasons above. Now the latter two may be unrealistic, I’m not sure about that. I’ve been listening to young coaches recently and liking what they say. Rooney Gerrard (on the overlap) and a few months ago Frank Lampard to name a few. Martin Demichelis, Bayern 2 coach?
On top of what we've been through this season if I had to endure the likes of Rochdale (remember the plant pot) and Altrincham (shudders) away again I'd be checking into Dignitas straight after.
as we've seen in crystal clear 4K, young does not necessarily mean good. in fact it can mean disastrous. our two last coaches are the worst in living memory for many. personally I don't care too much about age. I do agree there's a point at which age can put a manager out of touch with the modern game. but you're usually looking in the 60's. big age range. absolute priority for me personally, is someone who understands League 1 football, and what it takes to be competitive there. I'm not even going to say 'what it takes to get out', as every other Club is trying to do the same thing. it's a very hard league to get out of. but for me our next coach 1000% has to be someone who understands League 1 football. the teams, the players, the style, the toughness. look at the list of managers in League 1. arguably every one fits that bill in some capacity. there isn't a single 'European import' among them. trying another random European coach would be unfathomable, after the last two efforts. based on what I've seen and heard from poya since his time with us, he will get absolutely steamrollered in League 1. he hasn't got anything like what it takes, for me.
I'm not sure understanding League one Football means anything. Look at Kieran McKenna. Doing well at Ipswich. The last 2/3 changes he was always the one I would have wanted but he was at Manchester United and then left too late for us after the appointment of Poya. Neil Critchley, Another one that's done really well. A massive well done to Ben Mansford BTW for that appointment. Done amazingly well at Blackpool and had little football League experience outside of maybe Papa Johns?
I'd rather rehire Markus Schopp than Lee Johnson. He's a poor manager, a bullshit merchant, and his sense of loyalty is even shorter than he is.
Lee Johnson hasn't got a promotion on his CV. Sounds like he spent a lot of the matches he was in charge at Sunderland haranguing the 4th official and getting red cards! Still as streaky as ever too. He's not the worst but I'd hope we can do better
I would argue both do. if they didn't, they wouldn't be succeeding as they are. both have earned their stripes at elite level in England. during that time they will have developed an understanding of English league football. it's interesting that you've identified two coaches that have come purely from youth set up though. you haven't mentioned Paul Warne, or Leam Richardson, or Steven Schumacher, or Darren Moore
Johnson, Carrick or Terry? I think you’ll be disappointed then. We won’t be able to afford to pay even half the salary any of those 3 will want. It’ll either be Asbaghi or some other unknown foreign youth coach we tout as the next big thing.
We all know whilst this board is in charge, the head coach will always be an European choice because they’ll see the likes of Stendel and Ismael worked and overlook the other awful appointments. For me, a wholesale change is required with the players and maybe giving some of the u23s a chance in a lower league could put Disco at the front of the queue ? Regarded highly with the club with his promotion to first team coach and will know who from the Academy can step up. Also, liked by the fans.
''I want a young coach with high standards for discipline. Someone the young group of players will respect but also have a slight fear of. I want a coach that has a strong style of play and will not alter from that because a few dinosaurs in the crowd moaned.'' They are 3 names I've mentioned. Like Marc says there are more coaches. I listened to the clip of Neil Warnock the other day and whilst he said he's retired it didn't sound like that to me. 2/3 years ago I would have said not a chance Since then I've listened to a lot of podcasts. Under the cosh, Ben Foster's podcasts and other radio talkshows and now I wouldn't have a problem. I was clearly wrong before.
I would have Warnock here in an absolute heartbeat. the fact that the Club have made no response to Warnock's recent media comments, is just further proof they have zero awareness, or interest, in the English game. Khaled should have been straight on the blower - "We read your interview Neil, is there anything we could do to bring you in next season?" The Club needs an absolute rocket up its ar$e, and there isn't a bigger rocket in League football. It's a travesty that we never even approached him. we know it won't happen, but it's proper $hit that we never even tried.
I’d like someone of the Ilk of Carlos Corberan , Apparently he was ordered to take a few days off during last intl break as he’s so dedicated/obsessed . But tbh would we have given him the time Hudds have given him considering the results and performances last season and would we have backed him with the players he required to play his way this season ? Imo while ever we’re separating coaches from player purchasing most coaches will have difficulty putting their full plan into place .
Something a friend and I talked about on the way down to Luton following the last Salford Doc. Gary Neville said on that. You sack a manager once every 2/3 seasons. You sack a manager twice in a season then I've made a mistake. Were they too embarrassed to make another change and admit they had made a mistake?
It should be easier IMO because they are appointing to a plan. The coach should fit into our plan and if they leave for whatever reason it's good luck and move onto the next name on the list.
I would like someone with experience in league one. Ideally someone with either a promotion under their belt. I know he is in a job currently and unless he gets sacked it's unlikely but someone like Bowyer would be good. Got Charlton up and helped steady the ship there after a turbulent time.
1000% agree that the accountability for these appointments sits with the CEO/Owners. I've never got personal about schopp or poya. I've got angry at them at times, but ultimately I've settled on 'they're just not good enough and should have never been given the job'. I genuinely have an amount of sympathy for both of them, for that reason. Doesn't remove the fact that they're both $hite though. Regardless of how inept the leadership is, that's no excuse for keeping poya on. That would be an even worse, more indefensible decision than hiring him in the first place. He should be already gone.
The plan still has its place but with more input into how a coach wants to play and what type of player fits into his main positions fircthst style . Carlos was working with players last year that weren’t fitting into his mould . He had a say within reason the players he could pick to suit his coaching style . I’d say it’s easier if a coach sees a player and determines himself whether that player would fit into his way of playing and whether he could tinker with his position if he needed to change rather than someone else saying so based solely on stats which for us has along with a few more factors had been disastrous this season .
Been honest I disagree. I've time stamped it but I go with what Dan Ashworth said about how they did it at his former club Brighton (now at Newcastle FC). Start at 3.15 if it doesn't btw
