Is anybody voting Conservative tomorrow?

They didn’t. And that’s part of the problem.

They’d have negotiated a deal that kept us in the customs Union.
That wasn’t good enough for the Brexit zealots who are only happy with a deal that totally wrecks our economy.
But … clearly it’s Labour at fault for that.

*they weren’t elected, so can’t be held responsible for any failures of the Tories with a working majority.

 

Jeez this reads more and more like a general election thread.

 

The UK has spent the last 12 years pursuing an ideology (austerity) based on an economic research paper with the most expensive Excel error ever - which when corrected showed the exact opposite was the best course of action.

This austerity slashed public services - more so in Labour than Tory voting areas - and caused a multitude of generational problems leaving the UK as one of the richest countries in the world containing 9 of the 10 poorest areas in Northern Europe, food bank use escalating, a pandemic ignored, and the cost of living going through the roof and people unable to afford to heat and eat.

Voting "Get The Tories Out" tomorrow might not change much in the grand scheme of things, but if enough Conservative candidates lose that will scare enough MPs into sticking the knife in the back of Johnson. The big problem with that is there is no obvious candidate - and at least half of the more high-profile candidates are either mad enough or stupid enough to make Johnson (probably in the bottom 5 worst PMs of all time) look like a proper visionary leader. Possibly the only good candidate for PM in the party is Theresa May (also arguably in the 5 worst of all time, but not as bad as the current incumbent)...

 

Another reason for me to vote Greens tomorrow. Conservatives stopped us seeing people, Labour wanted the Tory party to go even tougher on what we could do and the Liberal Democrats won't accept the result of Brexit which as with any vote we have to accept the result. That leaves just one party as I don't have an independent to vote for.

 

The bloody bridge is being built. Steelwork has already started and work on site starts in Summer. A number of issues created a domino effect of delays to the construction. Yes, it’s been a farce, but the majority of the issues and delays were beyond the councils control. The level crossing couldn’t ‘just be reopened’ either. I wouldn’t say ‘little consideration’ has been given to football fans. I don’t think the council particularly relish the fact they’re having to pay out £140k for another season of road closures and security!

 

So… were the greens anti lockdown?

 

As a nation perhaps we could be financially better off however as we aren't based in London then we as people and as a town will basically never be better off out of the EU.

The way I see it is this (simplified a bit)

Option one: Each Barnsley resident gives £100 to the EU. £30 of that goes to other countries like Greece etc. £40 goes to funding things in London and the south and £40 comes back into Barnsley and the north.

Option two: each Barnsley resident gives £100 to the UK government. £80 of that goes to funding things n London and the south and £20 comes back into Barnsley and the north.

 

Conservatives were probably the party the most against restrictions but nobody should be voting for them.

 

In fairness the council aren't having to do that. They're choosing to and it's bonkers because it isn't needed.

 

All well and good saying that until there’s an accident - It’s better to be safe than sorry. Although, the cost might not be so high next season with half the amount of fans in attendance!

 

Yes. I find it very intriguing that a lot of the areas that received large amounts of EU funding (mostly to repair the decimation caused by Tory cutbacks and closures in the 70’s and 80’s) were the ones that voted to leave in the greatest capacity.

All parties supported lockdown.

But despite having ‘left’ politics, you’ll support someone else that supported lockdown because Labour are the ones that let you down.

I know you appreciate it was an oversimplification, but the simple fact is that paying that £100 gave us a shop front that gave us £120 back before we start discussing the local funding we get back.

So we’ve got £120 worth of lost jobs as well as the lost £40

 

For avoidance of doubt I meant to say that Labour didn’t ‘dismiss Brexit voters out of hand’, and that’s the problem. Stephen Dawson liked my earlier comment but I think he misunderstood. Brexit is the single biggest act of self-harm any nation has ever inflicted upon itself, and no amount of wishful thinking or Daily Mail propaganda is going to change that.

But the closures don't make any logical sense. In my opinion they actually make it more dangerous. For example what is the logic of closing the slip roads of the flyover?
