So the FA thinks that singing 'Three Lions' comes across as "arrogant"...

....and "may offend" other countries! It's a song FFS!

It would surely be better to focus on attempting to improve or certain elements of travelling fans behaviour rather than this nonsense.

    Strewth!!

It's served its time as the official FA song. No doubt the fans will keep on singing it, not really news.

Yerbut! The suggested replacement is 'Sweet Caroline' !! (Neil Diamond) Really? I don't get the connection with English football.

Daft from the FA. The song isn't about arrogance it's about hope and unwarranted optimism despite decades of underachievement. If other countries don't understand that, it's not on us.

I like Three Lions. It's a song about hopes and dreams, about wishing for something better, even though you're unlikely to get it. It's a wistful reminiscence, a look back at your sporting heroes and remembering the good times.

I don't get the sporting connection to Sweet Caroline at all. Nothing against it as a song, but you might just as well sing Stairway To Heaven or Hotel California or Ziggy Stardust. Utterly meaningless in a football stadium.

I think both are awful. Although the original 3 Lions in 96 as a wide eyed 14 year old was brilliant! But the song has had its day and aged terribly.

I can’t imagine in what world it offends other countries though? I remember an interview with Jurgen Klinsmann who said even the German squad at Euro 96 listened to it! As others have said it encapsulated the hopes and dreams of football fans and that I imagine is universal.

3 Lions is a football song.

Sweet Caroline is a song more associated with being played in the cheesey section of a wedding disco.

I'm sick to death of Three Lions but its absolutely not arrogant. Hopefully we adopt Black Grape's "England's Irie" in its place!

Aren't you quoting from a Daily Mail opinion piece about why they think the FA are planning on 'axing' the song? Can you show me a direct quote from an FA spokesperson who has stated this?

The FA are dropping the song as an official anthem. There is no story.

There's lots of things I don't understand about this?
    Where's the story come from?
Why is the FA involved? It's never been an official song other than for the tournament it was written for has it?
    Why is it deemed arrogant?
Why would we feel the need to adopt Sweet Caroline?

Without some context this sounds like a story about nothing of any importance.

I just read the BBC papers roundup on the BBC news page website. It actually came from the Sun and admittedly I did not notice that.
Presumably an unnamed source has leaked it and the Sun have added a quote from Paul Gascoigne to try and add weight. Presumably the Sweet Caroline reference has come from the same source.
That said it is about the right level for FA decision making prioritisation.

Same here, it's a harmless song and reminds us all of that great (but ultimately heartbreaking) Euro '96. Sweet Caroline has been adopted by boxing and works well - the line 'good times never felt so good' particularly stands out and has that boozy singalong, feelgood element. The same feeling may apply at an England match in the build-up, but come the 90th minute (or after extra time and, God forbid, penalties) as we all know, we likely will have had better times and all we are left with is a general feeling of collective pain. Actually, maybe it's the perfect gallows humour song for England's plight...

Have to disagree on this one Old Goat

Hotel California resonates deeply with me and my support of Barnsley FC, especially through the bad times, despair, and heartache coupled with the odd angry flounce and the swearing I'd never set foot in the place again.

Three Lions is a classic associated to us. Sweet Caroline is a 50+ year old song an American wrote about his now long divorced second wife that is sung all over the place at different events. No comparison.

I Googled 'FA 3 Lions arrogant' and it seems the Mail are also running the same story.
