He's got a point. Starmer is crowing about the small gains Labour have made compared to what was expected of them and because of what he said about Sunak it will be interesting if he thinks the same about himself if he gets a penalty.

Thats typically when making a decision on a full and final application. Larger developments require outline planning permission which is used to identify scale, proposed layouts, and the types of materials used on the buildings. The council then need to consider these before a developer commissions full plans for approval. Enough pressure from residents to a council at this stage can make a difference. Had a local councillor bothered to review the outline plans, speak to residents, and then provide viable alternatives that still accept the development but address some of the concerns then that’s much more likely to be listened to and considered than a blanket objection to the scheme in full.

Some councils have already agreed pre-determined conditions for all developers E.g Kirklees won’t allow developments in Holmfirth that use materials that aren’t sympathetic to the existing buildings - hence why Aldi and Lidl are both made with stone rather than cheap cladding.

There’s nothing to stop BMBC doing the same, and they really should be doing this already to meet and better their environmental and sustainability targets, but I guess the fear is that too many conditions may make developments unviable (more expensive materials etc.) and the council could then lose out to a neighbouring council that aren’t as precious.

There's a fundamental issue here though. Labour were at a high level of vote in the 2018 council elections. It was the 2019 GE where votes collapsed. But the 2022 council data can only be compared with the 2018 data, which doesn't account for the 2019 collapse.

When you look at the Sky projections for overall sentiment for a GE, it shows the tories would lose around 80/90 seats on these votes and lose their majority. Labour would have around an extra 60.

Granted Labour wouldn't get a majority either. But for the tories to try and paint this as anything less than disaster is just the latest disingenuous line of commentary.

As for Starmers actions, I find it all very meh. It's clearly nothing like the incessant couldn't care less breaches by the convict, but the media are already starting to say his position is untenable.... though they've never said that about the convict.

On one hand, I'd say if Starmer was fined and took the moral high ground and resigned, that would put significant pressure on the convict to resign. But I doubt he would. And he'd instead use it to play down his own law breaking by suggesting everyone did it anyway.

If Starmer is found to have broken the law and is fined, I actually expect him to resign as party leader. That’s not me saying he should (though I do), that’s me saying it’s what I think he will do.

I agree with you, I'd expect him to as well. Such a thing may prove to be a good thing ahead of a GE showing the morality schism, or the tories may successfully continue on their "we're all the same" mantra.

Exactly this. It would be too good an opportunity to take the moral high ground and whilst it wouldn’t bode well for him personally in the immediate short term, the party would make sure he did it if he didn’t do it himself.

I’d like to think he had enough morals to not need encouragement but either way, if he’s fined I expect him to go.

Which begs the question, who’s the next leader? I’d consider parachuting Andy Burnham into a safe seat somewhere and bringing him in. Sadiq Khan likely has similar ambition.

I don’t see anyone else likely to lead the party to a GE win who is currently on the benches.

They are all as bad as each other what ever badge they are under. For Decades now we have been ruled by individuals who have lost touch with the people who vote for them. Hence by cheaper food, be careful what you watch on TV, don’t sing the 3 Lions you arrogant lot and avoid the pot holes when driving. Rant over.

They arent though thats the problem - The Non Dom controlled Right wing Media keep pushing this message but its just not true
Johnson has driven a coach and horses through out democracy - he repeats lies after lies in parliament. There was a culture of law breaking during covid that he presided over and lied about - and thats before we start on the lies he told to get Brexit done, about the NHS, about food standards etc etc

No previous party leader has behaved in this way

Durham police have been pressurised into re-opening the investigation over an event that no one denies took place (wonder if they will re-open the Cummings one)
Their initial investigation concluded that a group of campaigners grabbing some take away pizzas and a beer whilst working into the evening was not in breach of regulations.

Ive no idea what new information has come to light maybe Starmer has done something wrong and if he has as others above have said I am sure he will resign - though I fear he is being fitted up here. But there is a massive difference between this and the culture of lawbreaking Johnson presided over - it wouldnt have happened under May, or Cameron or Major or even the evil woman before him

Currently the country is being gaslighted on an industrial scale by the Tories and their paymasters in a way that hasn't been seen in Europe since WW2 and I am getting very concerned about the way its working

The South has woken up to Bojo and his clown troops incompetence and dishonesty meanwhile here in the North the Brexit mob are still living in some alternate reality were everything's rosey and we've taken back control and it's all down to Bojo.

It is that attitude the media is desperate to instil into people. Gaslighting folk into thinking there’s no point voting against the tories as everyone else is just as bad. It is genuinely at the point where even the rabid right wing media can’t pretend all is well with their poster boy and his cronies - so instead they paint the picture that the rest are the same.

    They really aren’t.

Tony Blair and his Middle East oil war won’t go down as a good prime minister in history - but look at everything he did for the normal people of this country - after 18 years of damage from Tory governments. We’ve currently had 12 (let’s not pretend the bloody lib dems had any influence 2010-2015) hard years of Tory incompetence - although the level of downright bastardry has increased in recent years.

Mmm. Or the alternative way of reading into that is that Labour have far more to offer the metropolitan middle classes than they do to their traditional core voter base. Lib Dems and and Greens made gains in the North, so why not Labour?

Labour gained Mayfair and lost Hull. Tells you all you need to know about how a Keir Starmer led Labour Party deprioritise the working classes.

    Well there's quite a leap!

Perhaps it tells you that Johnson and the Tories have been more successful at conveying their message about "levelling up" or that brexit is good for you - both in the absence of any evidence to support that? It helps of course that they have the Murdoch empire and the Daily Blackshirt banging their drum!
