Barnsley fans: "we need someone with more experience" Also Barnsley fans: "we've missed out on Scott Brown" (a man with no managerial experience) Don't get this one if I'm honest. People have lambasted the links to Jimmy Floyd, but I'd take him any day over Scott Brown.
If Scott Brown had played for us all last season we wouldn't have gone down imho. I know that'd be nearly impossible signing to have pulled off but you get my drift with the player type. Experience, a winner, organisational, game management, tough and inspirational. Our kids would have flourished.
As John Dennis once said choosing a manger is not a science So Devaney might do ok. But my gut feeling is that the job needs a strong personality with a clear idea of how he wants to play. Not sure that's Martin. It might be unfair, but it suggests to me the owners have lost interest in the 'project' at Oakwell.
They lost interest once our relegation started to look certain last season. I agree with regards to Devaney but let's be honest here, he's cheap and that's the priority now.
What are you basing that on ? I am not dismissing your claim I am just curious to know if you have inside info or you have heard something , if you have concrete evidence then I am off to the bookies
I've thought recently about Conor Hourihane. I think he's on the downward slope in terms of his career now. Certainly no future at Villa and I suspect he may struggle to get in at top half of the Championship sides. I think he once said that he'd love to come back someday. I think he's also said that he'll move into coaching / management at some point. Given those things I wonder whether we may be able to tempt him back as player manager. He obviously doesn't fit the 'experienced' requirement many (including me) have said is necessary but equally important for me is that it's a strong character and someone with high standards and I think he ticks those two criterion. I'm thinking back to the success we had with Allan Clarke, Norman Hunter, Danny Wilson and romanticising Conor may be able to stop / reverse our decline. It won't happen of course but how would people feel if it was to be him?
I will give the bookies a miss on that info, I am not sure even if it his job what has been advertised & even if it was he might have been offered another position, we will see , interesting times .
I don't feel like we have "missed out". I do feel that Fleetwood may have added to their collection of utter kn0bheads as player/ manager though.
