Visited today. What a beautiful, peaceful and special place to honour lives lost. If you haven't been, I really recommend it.
A few miles south of Burton on the A38. I live a few miles north of Walsall so it's only 25-30 mins away. Perhaps something to do pre the Burton Albion match next season.
Completely agree. My wife and I spent 15/20 minutes in that section. There's an excerpt from a letter sent by a soldier to him mum. He writes that he was ill and so left his position in the trenches, only to be arrested for desertion. He tells his mum not to worry and that he was going to try to explain. The display confirmed that he was shot the following morning.
It's the age of them, displayed on the posts, that gets you. Some of them were kids. Lied about their age to sign up in the first place and then shot for cowardice.
Alrewas in Staffordshire next to the Trent, just south of Burton. It's about 7 miles from our house, I cycle past it occassionally. We went early this year because of the anniversary of the sinking of The Repulse. Anne's dad served on the ship but was fortunate to be injured whilst loading one of the guns and was in hospital when it was sunk....
