Russ Martin and Ryan Lowe have stepped up and done well at Swansea and Preston, whoever gets job hopefully we’ll play and be coached better than last season.
To be fair his football is poor but at least he gets results in a result based business. The last 2 coaches we have had in schopp and poya both played ***** football (some of in schopps case probably the worst ive ever seen)and didnt get results either.
Be interesting to see what comes of this. Personally I just can’t see Duff wanting to come here. By all accounts his missus is from Cheltenham so it means uprooting his family, & to be quite honest once he realises he won’t have full control over transfers then it’s only going to be one answer unfortunately. Plus he’s bound to have one eye on the Burnley job. The money comparison will be huge, probably worth uprooting the family going back to a club where he’s loved. Hope I’m wrong as he seems a good fit.
As direct as we were under Big Val though, his style of play was nothing like what Ainsworth has Wycombe doing. Val had us looking like the SAS, direct, efficient, clinical. Ainsworth has Wycombe looking like a scrap between rival Magaluf Stag parties.
How do we know he won't have full control of transfers, we may have changed the plan. Time will tell of course, but I suspect things may have changed for the better
Three year contract on a lot more money with way more potential. Cheltenham to Manchester/Sheffield/Leeds isn’t the other side of the world. We’re a well respected, high profile club at League One level. More than half the issues we see as supporters won’t even be on the radar or cared about by new signings or coaching staff. Any new manager will want to know his budget for the season - not the ins and out of the accounts. Otherwise half the teams in England would struggle to attract anyone. Oakwell and the training facilities we have, the supporters when there’s 10k plus inside, would impress virtually all League One and Two managers. The way we recruit isn’t that different to how most teams do it, and the Head Coach is heavily involved if they’re strong enough and have the backing of the CEO. We’re not some alien team in our approach to recruitment.
Having been lucky enough to spend some time in Cheltenham, its got an awful lot going for it if you've got a bit of money, not saying Barnsley isn't a nice place to live, but its not Cheltenham. Having said that he obviously enjoyed his time at Burnley, and as well as having similar names the places aren't that different, so i doubt that would bother him. more likely the wife and kids situation, but lets face it we'll be able to pay him twice what Cheltenham can afford and he'll be able to live somewhere twice as big for the same money in Barnsley. We would definitely be a stepping stone, but as long as the club show sufficient ambition there's no reason he can't think that we have a shot at promotion and that would raise his profile massively.
me too.....love the quote..."Just because you're a footballer doesn't mean you have to be a knobhead also".
Does any manager or head coach have full control over transfers any more? Plus I'm not sure he will go direct from Cheltenham to Burnley, but he might hold out for a Championship club, or a League 1 club with a higher transfer budget.
Not sure he would turn us down to be honest. He will get more money here and a higher chance of promotion to Championship which in turn opens more doors for his career. The only reason he might not come is if he has been contacted by Burnley, but I can only see them wanting him if they get relegated. If they saw him as their choice to take them forward regardless of their division, they would have snapped him up by now as Dyche has been gone for a while now.
If I were him I'd be targeting a mid range Championship club or a League One team with a very real shot at promotion and no behind the scenes issues. I reckon those are the sort of clubs that will be looking at him too. I'd have no issues with us going for him but in his shoes I don't think I'd see uas as a good value bet. Depends what other vacancies come up I guess.
It seems Barnsley FC are looked upon in a better light outside of the town. We should be proud of our club and our town and look forward to better times instead of the continuous "putting us down".
Considering Preston, Barnsley, QPR, Forest, Birmingham, Peterborough, Swansea, Reading, Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, Hull and Blackburn have all needed, or need, a new manager in the last 12 months, we’re the only team to make an approach. So I’m not sure who else he will be waiting for? We’re a great opportunity for him. Interesting that Rob Edwards was put forward by so many, considering Duff has achieved a lot more so far with Cheltenham (league winners and League One stability on zero budget).
I think the last sentence is the nub of it. If there are multiple clubs looking at the same sort of appointment and they are more attractive, then we'll have competition. If not, then we'll likely look attractive compared with his current club.
