Following on from Statis’ thread, and not to disrupt that one…

People that sit in their cars in the chip shop car park are weird. Discuss.

Bit harsh on the kids who are sat in the car waiting for their parent to run in and grab the dinner.

Not weird if you've travelled to Cleethorpes for them

Surely you’d sit on the front and eat them?

I can't decide if they're more or less weird than people who go through a drive thru of a McDonald's and then sit in the carpark eating.

Not really. Fish n chips straight out of the fryer give off quite a lot of steam so are better served straight away either on a plate in a restaurant or out of paper if takeaway. Wrapped and driven home they tend to be a bit soggy. Fish n chips that have been in a warming cabinet for some time are less soggy after wrapping but usually that is where the chippie is less busy/popular so turnover is lower is and so the fish and chips are not as good in the first place. For to the record, my favourite chippie is Ingham's at Filey. Barnsley it was always Shaw's at Dodworth.

I don’t mind sitting in somewhere on my own but none of my mates would do it. I have had random guys come sit with me though which is annoying, I think they actually think they are doing a favour and ‘rescuing me’ from being alone. I’d do a drive thru and sit in my car if I couldn’t be bothered to put nice clothes (not fancy just ironed etc.) on or have freshly washed hair or even if I couldn’t be bothered to get out of my car to sit at dirty tables.

I've always wondered why nobody throws a silica packet in with takeaway chips, or develops a carton with a moisture absorbent element in the lid because they always travel terribly

Normally do it. Shaws up Dodworth. Get the fish n chips then move away from front of shop so someone else can park, sometimes jet up the road thru Silkstone and up to the lay by before you go down to Penistone. Just nice view and watch the world go by.

But fish n chips gotta be nice n warm out of the fryer..

Kind of agree with the original poster… I do eat food in my car from a drive through, but never fish and chips as the smell lingers for a few days.

Often eat other food in the car as the weather is generally too crap to eat it outside. I will however put up with being cold with fish and chips…

Y-Pas has one, although oddly enough I never use it even when its empty. I always park across the road in Kexbrough Club car park and then walk across to the chippy.

I will take this as broadly acceptable because of the view factor.

I live near Wetherby Whaler and Kingfisher, they’re hotspots for this sort of behaviour.

There is something intrinsically appealing to my primitive brain about eating fish and chips in a doorway, sheltering from rain. Fish and chips should always be eaten sheltering from rain. I think this is one reason why I don't like them here. But yes, eating them in a car, raindrops tapping on the car roof, one window slightly open to vent the steam is acceptable on this basis.

One of my favourite places to dine out is my car. Seat moved back, window down, talksport on can of pop on dashboard, what's not to like. I invite my kids out for this experience they like it, the wifes not invited though and if dining alone it's the perfect place.

Fish and chips fine in the car, I would draw the line at having an Indian meal though.

You're describing exactly a vivid memory I have of time with my late dad there, sitting with Shaw's fish and chips, silently admiring the view. Simple but I would give anything to do it again.
