League 2 should relegate three clubs like the three leagues above them do. Then you can have the national league play offs done the same way as the leagues above them do things.
Brackley 21 points in front of York but York win at brackley then beat Boston at home and promotion to national league.they know the rules when enter competition
Keeps the season alive though. Maybe once York knew they couldn’t catch them, they eased off in the league to concentrate on the play offs(not saying they did but is feasible) making the difference bigger.
It’s another case of ££££££££ ruling the roost. If I remember correctly, play offs were introduced to regulate the number of clubs in each division due to having fewer teams in the new premiership. (I’ll stand being corrected on this because I’m not certain) but the upshot is, a once only device to sort the numbers out became a permanent fixture when the powers that be realised what a money spinner it was. Effectively, they changed a league system into a knock out. Contrast this with the decision to change the European cup from a knock out competition to the Champions league. As everybody knows, a league is the fairest way of finding a teams level Ie: generally the best team wins the league, the worst team is bottom and the team in 10th place is the 10th best etc etc. Changing the format of the European Cup ensured that teams like Malmo, for instance could never reach the final again. They might get lucky once and beat Real Madrid et al, but over time the league system will sort them out and guarantee the final is between two ‘super clubs’ ensuring ££££££££££. Completely opposite actions which ensure exactly the same goal - £££££££££ (I knew that £ button would come in handy one day)
Fair enough, its all about opinions. but sorry I can't agree, once the lead gets that big I just can't see it as fair. Nobody is talking about scrapping the play offs, just for a certain amount of points, which would surely encourage more teams to 'go for it'
Playoffs came in shortly before I started following football in the late 80's, but my understanding was that their main purpose was to keep the season 'alive' for more clubs for longer, because there was a tendency for half the league to have absolutely nothing to play for from late Feb onwards. I don't think this is a bad thing at all, and it's fair to say that without the playoffs at least 4 of Barnsley's most memorable seasons since then wouldn't have happened. And maybe I'm old fashioned, but the old style European Cup with its knockout format was 100x more watchable than the Champions League.
I'm with you on that. I didn't mind watching the Champions of the English league during knockout games. When it Became 4 english teams playing in european leagues it was a no no for me.(saturation football did my head in. I became bored of watching anyone bar tarn.) I can't remember watching a european game since.
That was the point I was trying to make in my earlier post , governing bodies don’t care what the fans prefer , it’s just money money money to them.
