What an absolutely horrific 1.8kilo dead cat story.

To be ‘tied’ to imperial measurements you’d have to have been 30 plus in 1973, making you 80plus now.

‘Imperial’? Surely just JRM and his ilk are the only people really interested in tying us back to the idea of empire.

I’m looking forward to the return of the death penalty on the next Brexit anniversary.

Since when did we well beer by weight?
There were specific exceptions for beer milk speed limits etc but it is currently illegal to sell 1lb of jam without giving a metric equivalent.

Fun fact for Brexiters. Our going metric had absolutely nothing to do with the EU and everything to do with adopting a far more practical system in use throughout the world but for a tiny handful of countries. Most of the groundwork was done in the 60’s so anyone claiming this as a Brexit benefit is at best misinformed

Don’t jest I fully expect them to try that in the not too distant future and maybe removing voting rights from none property owners or maybe go fully back to the 19th century and take away womens voting rights

There's one thing they can never do.
Introduce an IQ test for voting eligibility.

I was born in 1972 so should use the metric system in its entirity, but I don't and can't even picture some things using those metrics.

I'm 6'3, I've no idea what my height is in metres or centimetres. I weigh about 12 stone, no idea what that is in kgs. I can picture a quarter of cherry lips or boiled ham, but wouldn't have a clue how to ask for a measure of boiled sweets or cooked meat in metric that represented the amount I wanted. I drive in miles per hour and things are miles away. A football pitch is about 100 yards long, it's about 50 yards to the back fence. I drink pints. I bought a pound of ox liver from the market yesterday, it was advertised using both systems. It has been for as long as I remember.

But if I want to measure something: length is in centimetres, weight is in grams and volume is in either millilitres or centilitres. Temperature in celcius.

Why this Frankenstein system? Because I got taught to measure things in school using metric. But for every day things, for buying stuff, for estimating, for communicating: no one used metric ever. And it still sounds really odd when I hear someone using it today.

tbh from a personal point of view ,I’d be well up for it I was born in the fifties and despite various attempts my brain never did grasp the change, I still think in pounds and ounces and measures in feet and inches.
But as you say times have moved on for ensuing generations and the world, so don’t get it!
    Wouldn’t argue mindst :p:p:p

As long as they list metric amounts they can put up a sign next to it showing measurements as ‘about the weight of 3 kangaroos’ if they want.

I'm 61,NYR. We have had the metric system since 1971,how much time do the British need? This is just another "dead cat on the table" to distract from a corrupt and incompetent government.

Oh I totally agree about the distraction and agree its ridiculous, and would be a massive backwards step, besides with the younger generation they would need to duplicate every label in both!
I think you are going the wrong way with the how much time do people need though, I'm 67 plus and the longer it gets ingrained for, the harder it gets.
Also totally agree its my fault but as long as the measures were given in both, it seems my brain just couldn't be arsed!

Wonder if we will revert back to the old money system of pound shillings and pence because I still have a load threpeny bitts, tanas, bobs 2bobs and half-crowns throwing about.

We have had a weird mixed system my entire life. Mid 60’s we moved to Celsius (I never understand Farenheit, I measure and weigh everything in metric…

except my height and weight, journeys are in miles (not surprising cos cars still measure in miles and road signs are too). But petrol is sold in litres, and the only conversion I ever do is litres to gallons.

who knows how many litres per mile their car is doing. It’ll always be mpg till we change to electric.

While we’re at it, let’s bring back Roman numerals for numbers. Who thinks that is a good idea? I for one
