The volcano was on the north part of the island but you could see it from it's east coast, so I think I would have been safe, though if it had been a severe eruption, I'd probably have been in a slight pickle! On the way home, we flew from Bali to Singapore and onward to Heathrow, it took off to fly away from the volcano, then for some unknown reason as we ascended, it banked hard at a fairly low height and circled the crater before heading away. Sadly I was on the opposite side of the plane so couldn't see... but a few who did get views got a bit hysterical as it smouldered!
It depends where you go mate. We mixed it up so went for some fancy meals in Thira (which is more expensive) but some mid range on the outskirts and also had gyros some nights which are 4 euros. Gyros is basically a doner kebab in baked pita, with chips in it and really fresh salad, taramasalata in - and taste awesome ! the quality of food is excellent and I think you would struggle to find a better view whilst you’re eating anywhere in the world if you were eating in Thira / Oia whilst the sun is setting.m, it’s breathtaking. here’s some places we went to give you an idea http://www.topsaraki.gr/joomla/ https://www.sunset-ammoudi.gr/ https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaur...a-Kamari_Santorini_Cyclades_South_Aegean.html
