Remember when putting a value that some of our fans think that he is not good enough for us a division 1 club so surely we would only expect a nominal fee, personally I think he is a quality player & will be sad to see him go, it really winds me up when our better players get stick, Mowatt last season Styles now, its as if some want us to fail

It was quoted in Euros, so the actual price is a mere £2.98m

Mowatt is an excellent midfielder, and I am sure he said Styles is more talented than he is. I think Styles will have an excellent career at a very good level.

That we probably can’t afford to take the option of.

Really? Given he's on a contract that was signed after only a handful of first team appearances for us, I'd guess he's not one of the highest earners at the club.

Given our wages were £14m the last time accounts were filed, I suspect some of the amounts we pay would be quite a surprise to us. Remember we paid MacDonald around £6,500 a week (escalating each year) a few years back, and he'd come from Torquay.

I don't think the issue is individual high earners. I'd say even Woodrow is likely to be on a modest wage by the standards of the level we're at. Issue is too many players on the payroll, and too many players that are likely to be on a similar level to Styles on the wage structure, despite being nowhere near him in terms of ability on the pitch.

I very much agree with you about volumes of players being a big issue. Though it's pretty hard to get to £14m wages. If you were to assume Woodrow was on £10k a week, thats £520k a year. £14m gets you 28 Cauley Woodrows.

Is the 14m just the playing squad, or the wage bill for the company as a whole (appreciate the players will take up the bulk of that anyway)?

Always felt that our wage structure seems to be to have a ton of players in a middle category, leaving little room for offering a higher band to players and also blocking a pathway for the u23s.

But if you go back to the season we have data for, I reckon we had more high earners then than we do now.
Mowatt was on more than Woodrow at one point, and didn’t we pay a fortune for the goalie on loan too. I bet Solly was on more than any of our current defenders.

I’m still finding it difficult to justify £14m though.
Even if you’re looking at employers NI as part of the wage bill, it’s eye watering from here, but doesn’t justify £14m

I mean its all relative. £10-£7k a week is still an obscene amount of money for part time workers to kick about a bag of wind, if they are lucky. But yes, I agree with you that we went down the route of too many players rather than using our available budget more wisely and selectively.

Sadly, we just don't know other than when figures leak into the public domain like the redacted papers for the MacDonald hearing which confirmed his wages.

I'd very much expect that £14m to a be the zenith of our wage bill. And I suspect play off bonuses swelled it a little too. We have brought in Benson, Oulare and Leya Iseka, and we had to find money for some of the wages (if not all, and a possible loan fee) for Quina, Bassi and Vita too.

I wouldn't be surprised if last seasons salaries were still around £12m.

Would imagine might have had clauses on for promotion number of apps etc doubt he’s being paid anywhere close to what he did when he first joined.
