Wakey is cracking. Still enough belting pubs around and in close proximity to each other.

Speaking of Wethers knocking through into the building next door, I wish the one in Cass would do that, as its the Job shop (dole office) next door. :p

Right near the centre and Bull Ring is the Black Rock which has always sold Tetleys and has many other beers nowadays.
It’s a proper pub only lacking spittoons on the floor.
Virtually un changed in 50 yrs …. no jukebox or food etc

Wakefield night life was on a downward spiral from probably before I moved there in around 97 until about 2013 and has been coming back with both decent boozers and plenty of food choices since then. After covid it’s got to being almost as busy as when I first moved there on a night out.
Shopping’s a different story, but you won’t find many success stories in town centres of comparable sizes anywhere in the north.
As for the best thing being the bus to Normy….fk me, there is a dump for you, makes Thurnscoe look like a Tuscan village.

Has anyone taken the bar underneath Unity Halls yet? Always thought that would make a great BrewDog Bar. Would need to be a franchise though if anyone wants in with me.

10p a pint night, that's a blast from the past.
I used to like Bitz on a Friday night but one to avoid on a Saturday when traveling footy fans were in town, that door in the disco bit was always open with the bouncers throwing someone down the metal stairs.

I’ve got so much spare time for a side gig…….

Anyone with spare cash kicking around give me a shout. Or just steal my idea and go and open one.

There’s definitely a market for one, although there are bars either side attached to unity hall. The centre had turned into a precession of vertical drinking establishments catering for kids which closed and reopened every 12 months but now some really nice bars have opened and more mature people have been lured back, the real ale type bars on the periphery still doing well though. Pubs on the west gate run have made a come back although we lost the elephant and castle opposite the old train station, that was an interesting boozer! Also the Council are getting strict on new licenses however.

Agreed, we went round wakey a few weeks ago and it was a cracking night, I was genuinely surprised how nice the pubs were

The Elephant and Castle’s days were numbered after that awful refurb and remodel that stripped out everything that was half decent about that boozer.

Used to go in fairly regularly at one point for a couple of years, especially for the room st the back with the pool table, but what it looked like last time I was in was heartbreaking. All the character had gone, awful drink offers, badly made and neon bright cocktails, knocked through most of the different rooms and rebuilt the bar.

Was always a bit too ‘Leeds’ for my liking anyway.

I know what you mean on the 12 month rotating vertical drinking bars. Cave Bar, Vegas Bar, something else Bar. Never ending at one point.

It’s like any large town/ City in that there are plenty of good pubs and bars offering whatever suits your fancy.
There are also many places which cater for the morning start all day drinkers if you know what I mean !

There’s nothing wrong with Wakey that isn’t wrong with dozens of others

There was a Bitz and a Buzz !
Reminds me that there also used to be a “Massage parlour” in the Eighties. No idea where it was of course.

Bitz was the long pub slightly higher up Westgate than Buzz (which would have been called Sloane's at the time).

Morphed in to The Gate at one point? Also had some horrible US Sports Bar name fairly recently too (as in the last ten years).

The Gate ( now Calder & Hops) is on Northgate and it’s a Spoons type pub.
Before it was bought by Mansfield Brewery in 80’s or 90’s it was a furniture carpet shop.
The Sports bar that had loads of tellys and was only full when Leeds were on, was on Westgate

I know that 'Gate'. Used to go there all the time as well.

But the bar on Westgate with the LONG bar. Wasn't that also called The Gate at one point? Next to Bing Badda Boom, turned in to HD Bar at one point.
