Im sure it was Sloanes pub restaurant in Westg't, that my parents took me to in June '84 as a treat for my 13th birthday. You had to go downstairs to it from the street level, and I think it was underneath the big Unity hall, on the corner, maybe ?. (it was a long time ago lol)
You want to go in there dressed up as Batman! I was regular in there from 17 to 20 years old. Every week without fail. Used to have pints with Joe Boland whilst the gee gees were on the TV and the betting slips were scattered across the pub. Remember a Wakefield Express article about the five roughest pubs in Wakefield. No idea how it happened but I was a regular and on first name terms with the owner/manager in four of them.
Yes that sounds about right, 13 in 84 makes you the same age as me I reckon it was 87 onwards when I started drinking in Wakey, only have vague memories of Sloane's as it was one of the last stops
Din't the old Rooftops nightclub become the Icon or Ikon in recent years, I went there a few times. Then its a mad scramble to the taxis at closing time, with the idiots and drunkards and vomiters lol, and the police as well all jostling with each other. Its like Wakey Westg'ts own version of the nightime Krypton factor assault course.
The York Street was my proper 'local'. Just behind Lightwaves. Remember it having a ‘refurb’ (for refurb see paint job) and I was second only to ‘Swifty’ in who went the most in that first year. He went every day, where as I missed 16 days. https://www.wakefieldexpress.co.uk/...eld-how-many-of-these-do-you-remember-1363271 Still struggling with what HD used to be called when it had a pub name. Now called ‘After Dark’ according to Google images, but in the late 90’s had a different name.
Eagles done well to keep going with alverthorpe club nearby and the probably more popular Flanshaw hotel that couldn't survive
I haven't bothered with Wakefield since the hardware shop in the Ridings closed. Anyone else remember it? "Knobs & Knockers". I never went in, but it was always good for a chuckle on the way past.
It was part of the Unity House setup and initially mainly a night club. It moved onto Drury Lane and is still there as part of the York House Hotel although it is now called San Leos ( get it )
Sloane was a restaurant in the 70’s and early 80’s , I know the guy who was head chef there , the owner of Unity Hall turned it into a nightclub . The place on Dury Lane renamed itself Sloanes in recent years
Wakefield used to be so great. Both shopping and a night out. Been a few times recently for reasons it's very difficult to explain once you've actually been. It's a hole. It's awful. It makes me sad, it's such a wreck. It's just a state.
Yes bpokies is next door to bolands or was. How old are you if you dont mind me asking? Must have been 15/16 years since i was last in on that memorable night. I sometimes venture in to the blind pig and strafford from time to time though.
