He played against us on that snow-bound pitch at Oakwell in 1963. 0-3 defeat against a side chock-full of internationals. When the FA Cup meant something
Managed NI when they beat Spain. In the 1982 World cup. I was as happy to see them win. as much as an England win. RIP Sir.
Yes so was I. Incredible that they now call games off if two snowflakes are found lying on the Grove Street pavement
That was a memorable night for Norn Iron, when Gerry Armstrong scored and they beat the hosts Spain in WC '82. I don't think they will ever get a manager like Billy Bingham again.
I remember watching the Spain match in 1982 in the Travellers in Dodworth. We drank quite a bit of Guinness that night!
I saw a statue of him in Northern Ireland last year. I think it was in Coleraine, but I may well be mistaken.
Billy Hamilton. Nothing else to add to that, other than Billy Bingham, Norman Whiteside, Gerry Armstrong and Billy Hamilton all occupy the same space in my memory.
The Everton right-winger that night was Alex Scott, former Hearts player and Scottish international. He didn't get much service in that game, but was a trickster of a winger, who liked the ball played to feet and then trick his way past the full-back. I only saw Bingham play once and that was for Luton Town. He was a winger in the Arthur Kaye mould - small, but fiery and seemed to be always on the boil during a game. He was another who, like Kaye, would try to get his retaliation in first on the full-back, knowing that he was going to get clobbered. His fiery red hair matched his style of play. I do recall that he was Luton's stand-out player in the game I saw. Constantly available; constantly working and calling for the ball; always taking on the full-back and very hard to defend against. Good memories on ninety-plus minutes. RIP to the Irish charmer who could 'charm the birds out of a tree.'
Ok I remembered it wrongly then. He was certainly a regular at the time for Everton. I stuck pictures and a match report in that season’s scrap book but I passed them all on to a younger relative last year. I hope she’s looking after them as carefully as I did for decades
Great memories Just looked at the 1982 squad and totally forgot about Noel Brotherstone Tricky winger who gave opposing teams loads of problems Became a painter and decorator when he retired after 400 professional games Sadly passed away at the very young age of 38
