Said it before and will say it again, we simply cannot sell him to anyone in this league. Would be a truly stupid move to strengthen a league rival and weaken us. If he is to be sold, he needs to go to Championship or abroad, not to another league one side. Board have done pretty well this summer so far, selling Cauley to a promotion rival would undo a lot of that good start.
The primary hurdle for us this season is balancing the books. Pure and simple. Anything else is a bonus. If selling Woodrow takes us a significant way towards doing that then, for me, it's entirely justified. As for selling them to a rival...I'd be quite surprised if any of those clubs are rivals this season as I reckon balancing the books AND being able to compete at the top of the league this season is a huge ask for us. Hope I'm wrong.
Yeah.. they'll be sniffing round hoping we just want to off load him.. get him off the wage bill. They'll want him for next to nothing, plus half any fee goes to Fulham.. Pointless, may as well keep him this season and let him walk on a free next summer
We need to balance the books but do so by selling Styles, Helik etc. Selling Cauley with one year left on his deal will not come close to offsetting the deficit in revenues, especially to any of those 3 clubs as they aren't going to be able to spend a massive fee given they are also in League one. I am not expecting us to be winning the league this season nor do I expect promotion etc. But we should be in the top half at least. Anything less would be really poor. That therefore puts us in competition with all those mentioned clubs and all of those will be expecting to be in and around the top end of the table. Baring in mind both Pompey and Ipswich finished mid table last season too, they would certainly fall into the category of direct league rivals.
It's not about how much these players will generate in transfer fees it's about how much they reduce the wage bill.
We still cant afford to sell to rival clubs though, it is just stupid especially Owls. Let him go by all means but not to a direct rival.
We do have several players on huge sums of money considering we're in the 3rd tier. We do need to get these off the books and unfortunately it may well be to teams in competition with us ,this is reality we're not a football club that is willing to overspend. The reality of relegation is now staring us in the face. Comments like I'm not bothered if we're relegated we will bounce back, in reality we will need to work hard for a top half finish. On listening to Duff I think this is acheivable but we need patience.
We're in the position where we have to offload wage cost and if possible, bring in fees. We can't be too choosey, well, not until we've gotten to a point of stability at least.
It's a big season coming up for Cauley he needs to get his mojo back because If he performs like he did last season then he'll be weakening a potential rival.
Think who ends up with the captaincy will show a big indication to what’s happening with him if not already moved on by then. If a deal comes in that works for the club financially I’m not opposed to him going tbh.
Sometimes surely we have to be a bit choosey. I can't deal with him going to Fowls. I could just about cope with Ipswich but not Fowls please, purely for selfish reasons. All my mates are Owls fans and one of them joked about them stealing Woodrow a few seasons ago when he was doing really well and I laughed him off. If he goes there now I would never hear the end of it. Please anywhere but there.
We're not going to let him go for nowt, so that rules out the blue pigs...we're hard up, they are absolutely skint...
He was poor last season for sure, as were many others. Cauley did seem to take a hell of a lot of stick though (more so than others) which is never going to help. If your own fans are non stop slating you its going to be hard to find that mojo so to speak. If we can get a good fee for him sell him for sure, just not to Owls please.......
While I agree that I wouldn't want to sell to a rival, as the manager says, the players, and us, may have to be realistic. We're going to have to sell some players, we simply have to in order to balance the books. But the only clubs coming calling may be League 1 clubs. Not ideal but that's what it might be. I'd prefer that not to be Wednesday too like, but we're in a hole we need to get out of.
