Yesterday’s news that Spain will cut VAT on electricity from 10 percent to five percent to shield consumers from soaring inflation

Energy prices in France have risen by just 4%, compared to the 54% in UK.

Nay on 60% of non British electricity companies own the Bitish market.
French supplies are owned 85% by the french government.
That's privatisation for yer. But still Vat could be reduced. Its generating (forgive the pun) billions for the government.

Privatisation will always always mean profit before people...

Use emergency powers to temporarily nationalize energy suppliers. Which MP's wouldn't vote that through?

dont think brexit is anything to do with it, its nothing but big companies and the government clawing back what the lost during the pandemic and this applies more to the oil companies and hmrc and they want back (and more) than it cost them during the first lockdown and the following two years of turmoil..

this government are happy for the extra revenue so i dont expect prices dropping anytime soon... roll on the next general election because that will be the only time this government offers anything productive

Thatcher is still crushing ordinary working people from beyond the grave.

Shame on any working class people who voted for the convict in no 10 back in 2019.

I'm pretty sure the energy companies weren't impacted one bit by the pandemic.

People still switched on leccy and gas. Probably even more so with homeworking

I remember posting on here 3 years or so ago that I would not get involved in arguments against a minority of Brexiteers on here. They are very noticeable by their absence and/or avoidance of the subject now that there is no doubt whatsoever that they and their ilk have royally screwed this country.

Only playing devil’s advocate here, as something definitely needs to be done, but VAT on domestic fuel is already 5% and has been for some years

I know. But if that one fact - our prices have increased 54% as opposed to 4% in France - could be hammered into the brain of even the most stupid Tory supporter, we might just get somewhere.

I'm not sure of the % mate, but for example
    5% of £100 is £5.
    5%of £200 is £10.
So why not freeze vat at £100. Or reduce to 2.5% till the crisis is over. An emergency budget.
I know it's not as simple as I've portrayed. But financial wizards should be able to put something together. This government are not interested because it's a winner for em.
More cost of a barrel. More cost of fuel. More tax for the coffers. From those that can least afford it.
Eat or freeze take your pick. If nowt changes afore winter I fear the worst in the death toll.

There's still a few that pop up every now and then - as evidenced in this thread already.

I hope they're happy that their vote has contributed to the misery and pain and ordinary folk are now suffering.
