Just been listening to him on good morning news.
Great speaker ,sensible politician and defended the Labour Party well in line to lacking support for the striking workers.
Saying we sat down with the bus drivers in Manchester and negotiated a settlement, rather than the approach this lot in Parliament are doing.
I didn't realise his role in the justice for Merseyside until I watched the series.
He really stands out as a future leader of the Labour Party.

Going back to 1974 is it? A labour victory without Blair? I'd rather have a more centrist labour party that could actually win a election than one that perhaps represents more of my political beliefs but is consigned to opposition. That said I don't think Starmer would win.
As was said on another thread on the subject, what we really need is the other parties to come to a agreement to reform the whole system and remove the outdated FPTP system. So we don't have such huge majorities for Governments who only gain around a 3rd of the actual vote.
Unfortunately no political party is ever likely to remove the system that has just out them into power.

While as a bloke and a potential leader he quite appeals, he was as slippery as the rest of them in that interview.

However I see where your coming from.

She (they/it/he/whatever) was looking for a way to hang him, so he needed to be slippery to an extent.

There hasn't been a decent Labour leader since John smith unfortunately' the party is lacking identity at the moment' Starmer does nothing but snipe from the sidelines' they have to start appealing to the working classes again' if ever there was an opportunity to get in its now because Johnson is a walking disaster zone...

As he said himself he cannot be considered for Leader as he is not a MP. He would have to give up his job and stand in the next General election. Pity.

Problem is, a sizeable proportion of the Labour and former Labour heartlands seem to fall for the Immigration and Patriotism line ( which often are lies) that the Tories run. We can only hope that the recent Wakefield by-election result is the tip of the iceberg, at least for the former Labour heartlands anyway.

I think the point is that even with the "working class" vote restored Labour would not win a majority.

Your last point is valid. I’m afraid all the rest is just rubbish.

we won’t but whatever I say won’t change your mind. There’s been plenty of Labour leaders more than capable. The current one might just be the one we’ve been waiting for. If however Labour supporters keep repeating the garbage right wing media line to spin what hope is there. No one’s perfect. The political system we have proves you don’t need to be. I know where my vote will be going and if KS still happens to be the leader he will have my full support.

John Smith is probably one of the best contenders for PM that never was.
Visited a friends relative killed in the war burried on Iona, Scotish Island if I remember.
And there was John Smith's grave
Sad that he never led the country.

Maybe not it but if they don't it won't solely be down to the working class vote. That was my point.

Harold Wilson. Much further to the centre left than Blair. Blair took a 25% lead created by John Smith and ran it down over time.
