Who is best out of these 2 outstanding Yorkshire batsmen, Sir Geoffrey or Joe ? Joe for me even though I was a massive fan of Boycott.
Both Great players but has to be root on figures. more of team player. And more exciting to watch. Sir Geoffrey faced better bowlers imo. Would have been interesting to see how Boycott would have played T20. Sir Joseph. Better ODI player. Soon to be followed by Sir Jonathan.
KP said Root will be England's best ever today so I don't think comparing him to anyone isn't going to be good for that OTHER. I wasn't listening to the comms although I did listen to the post-game stuff with Ravi KP and Ian Ward and they were saying it was reversing today. If so he played the best bowling attack in the world at 70% SR without giving away a chance. At some point in the SA series, he will get to get another 1000 runs scored in Test cricket in the year.
Hard to compare players from different eras because the game has changed so much. Pitches are miles better today, so that probably makes it a little 'easier' for Root. But Root is certainly a more complete player than Boycott - he was very one dimensional. Its like comparing Messi with Maradona. I'd probably say Root though.
Boycott achieved some hugely significant milestones fair enough, but managed to destroy team spirit and bore spectators to death at the same time. I well remember Jackie Hampshire telling his team to stonewall as a protest against Geoff's desperately slow scoring in a match that Yorkshire should have won. And there was the famous incident where Botham deliberately ran him out for England. No, give me Joe Root any day, he would bat in the right way for the team irrespective of any personal milestones...
ROOT definitely. More of a team player too. Boycott definitely the best test player but all round got to be Joe.
Can't directly compare the two. All I think is that Root could have prospered in Boycotts time. Doubt Geoff would get a game in today's.
Both. Silly comparison imho, different eras, different playing conditions, different bowlers, different positions in the batting order.
Difficult comparison, Root has a higher average 50.08 to Boycott's 47.73, whereas Boycott has 23 not out's to Root's 17. What I would say though is that the sustained aggression of fast bowling faced by Root is significantly lower than it was in Boycott's time.
I don't follow cricket but if its based on attitude and pleasantries against rudeness and selfishness then Root all day long.. I've never met Root but he surely can't be worse than Boycott on that score. On the subject of cricket Some 40 odd years ago I once attended a sports presentation which was also attended by certain players from Yorkshire cricket club who were friends with the landlord of the pub we were in ...after the presentation we were playing pool, winner stays on and everybody was adhering to the rules....money was on the table and there was a queue to play when a some what slightly tipsy David Bairstow approached the table and got argumentative about taking over the table ...has he wanted to play against his mates who were also there with his colleagues ....he was a well built lad and if memory serves me right towered over me and the lad who were playing ...the more stroppy he got the more aggressive he became .....no matter how many times we tried to explain to him the rules the more he refused to listen suddenly he reared up to his full height brought his clenched fist down on the drinks table he was stood against which knocked over all of the drinks on it and said that world famous line...DONT YOU KNOW WHO IAM Before he could say anymore two lads who were as equally built as him had witnessed him knocking over their table of drinks and were very handy walked up behind him just in time to hear me say ...yeah I know who you are ...you're the big morngy Fxx ker who's going to have to put his hand in his pocket and buy a round of drinks for the big lads stood behind you and just for the record your still not getting hold of the table, before I could say anything else 3 of the lads piped up in unison now fxxx off...to which almost everyone in the room started laughing ...Needless to say a certain Mr Bairstow retreated with his tail between his legs so to speak ....not happy with that he returned 10 minutes later with his mate the Landlord who on finding out the truth of what had taken place told him rules are rules that's what they are all playing you'll have to wait ...he stormed off in a proper huff lol happy days eh lol maybe he's still waiting to play who knows lol
I’m assuming you know that Jonny Bairstow’s dad died by suicide a number of years ago. You should read Jonny’s book (a clear blue sky) that goes into the reasons behind his fathers mental issues. That way you just might be a bit less ******* callous. Possibly.
Red Striker your bang on. I loved watching his dad David . I've cried several times watching young Jonny point to the sky on reaching milestones. We have no idea what sportspersons or people in the limelight suffer with on retirement. Windass an example top bloke but as also suffered with depression.
