Hello all, Just thought I’d help those travelling over with a bit of a guide. I’ll probably miss a few things so feel free to ask any questions and I’ll try to help out. But before I do that, I’m delighted to say that my lad Stephen is the Barnsley FC mascot that night so please give him a cheer! So, on to the guide: By Road: Come down the M1 then A1M link road but make sure you take the first turn off for Wetherby. If you stay on the A1M for Harrogate you do about another 20 miles and half hour! Follow the signs for Wetherby town centre and after the bridge take the first left at the mini roundabout and then simply follow your nose. That’s the Wetherby/Harrogate Road and it goes straight to the ground. Parking: Very limited around the ground but there are one or two side streets (St. Nicolas Road, St. Helens Road, Wedderburn Road and a bit on your left off Wetherby Road just after the crossroads where the Woodlands pub is) but these get busy. The best bet is to turn right straight after the football ground (Lancaster Park Rd) and continue past the hospital until you come to the junction (Knaresborough Road). Then either go left and first right or right and first left and there’s loads of street parking available. There’s also a cafe bar, chippy and dominoes pizza there as well as a convenience shop for drinks and snacks. It’s a couple of minutes walk back to the ground. Nearby Boozers: It’s a dry ground but there are two pubs nearby. The first is the Woodlands and it has a decent sized car park. On the Wetherby road a couple of hundred yards up the hill past Sainsburys. It’s on the crossroads opposite the petrol station and is a couple of minutes walk to the ground. The other is the Empress. Located on the Stray, a couple of hundred yards past the ground go straight over the roundabout then first left. There’s also limited parking around there but if you park where I suggest above, it’s a couple of minutes walk. From Town: The No 7 Wetherby bus stops at the ground and is a couple of quid. Alternatively get any Knaresborough bus and get off at either the Empress or Granby Corner. The Knaresborough buses run every 10 mins and it’s a five minute ride from town. If you want to walk, it’s 15-20 mins depending how much you’ve had to drink! Loads of pubs in town but if you like craft ales and brew houses I recommend the Starling which also serve cracking stone baked pizzas (Tell Dan I sent you!) Warning: Be prepared to pay at least a fiver a pint in most places. The Ground: We’ve been allocated two standing areas. The Barclay LED stand is down the side and in my opinion is a better view than the Myrings stand behind the goal. The seating area is also down the side near the corner flag. Access is by the first two turnstiles. It looks like one but splits when you go in and there’s a small food kiosk as you enter. (The pies aren’t bad!) As I say, I may have missed something so please feel free to ask and if I can help I will. All the best, Gaz
As a fellow resident I’d say that about covers it. I’d just add that any Reds fans coming from the town/Empress roundabout direction should be aware that it’s a fairly narrow pavement separating the ground and the road so just be careful. It’s a busy road and you’ll be walking past/through home fans queuing to get in. Just be aware that’s all, or better still walk down the other side until you get to the away end. I’d be surprised if there’s any trouble but who knows - it’s football!
Something I forgot. Home fans queue at the turnstiles at the Empress/Hospital end, away fans turnstiles are at the Woodlands end.
