It's the fact we have beaten so many other clubs to the signing that is the main statement. Yes this lad played in L2 last season, but he was POTY at the title winning team and was in the TOTS etc. based on his superb performances. That lead to several clubs being keen on signing him across L1, SPL and supposed championship level too. If we have managed to beat several other clubs, including clubs higher in the pyramid that us then that is a good statement IMO.
https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/b...ship-clubs-to-signing-of-13-assist-wing-back/ Have we beaten Championship interest? That website is the only place I see that mention and it's a comic of a website where you shouldn't take what they say seriously. They don't even mention clubs. Is there a mainstream media outlet who have named clubs interested in Cadden? Even then we don't know if it's agent talk to try and get him a better deal, like what happens with us with players. I haven't heard any manager championship or not say they are after Cadden or try and play down being interested in him.
I never really buy this 'beaten Championship clubs' line. IMO I suspect what that actually means is they didn't really want them that much. if pretty much any championship club decided they really wanted a player we were in for, I can't imagine we'd stand too much of a chance.
None of us know for sure. I can't say for certain Championship clubs have offered him anything. I have seen Reading linked via Twitter but could be fake for example, but in the same way you can't for certain tell me that clubs haven't offered him anything. Based on what I have seen posted (which may well be false), we seem to have beaten several clubs to his signature and many fans on twitter have been asking for their clubs to sign him as they all seem to rate him. He was also without doubt one of the best players in L2 last season which again is only a good thing. For that reason, compared to the other signings we have made who all have promise but haven't just come off a title winning season and great individual seasons at a decent ish level, this one seems like the biggest statement signing so far this window.
Think our model persuades some players to join and as much as people are lead to believe we pay peanuts. We might higher wages than the odd championship club. Or maybe offering more wages....
I sometimes think Barnsley fans, or football fans in general, enjoy being pessimistic and glass half empty, because no matter what happens it can never be taken as the positive it is. Assuming he signs, it means we'll be starting the season with League Two's best LWB who gets assists, scores goals, and can take a decent free-kick. After all the clamour for 'no more foreign punts' and 'why can't we go back to signing the best players from the league below', it's almost like it's ingrained in us at times. It's a statement of intent because it was only three months ago that many supporter had us down as destined for League Two and a Summer where no new signings would come in. Yet here we are, signing our fifth player of the Summer, and one that has been highly courted by the biggest teams in the league we're in and in the division above. It's a signal of intent that we're still an attractive club to these players when all we've heard for six months is how toxic and awful things must be.
He would be a very good signing. His stats last season were good at that level and he's the type of player we should be signing. I just don't see signing a player who played last season two leagues below where we were playing a statement of intent. That's a bold statement. A statement of intent would have been Warnock as head coach or bringing back Conor Hourihane or keeping hold of Morris and Woodrow. I just haven't seen Cadden linked to Championship clubs by any mainstream media outlet. Just random Twitter accounts.
Cmon then, I’ll bite. Why is it a poor signing? I assume because he has more than 25 minutes worth of mens football behind him. Either that or because he wasn’t hoarded by the Chelsea academy at some point.
Think you will be one of only a few who think this is a poor signing. Getting this best in his position from the league below doesn't strike me as a bad move. Genuinely curious to know who you would say is a better option that this lad on our budget on a permanent deal too.
Is that because you haven't heard him mentioned on a podcast and he doesn't have a Chelsea Academy pedigree? He might turn out to be rubbish for us. But it's a good signing whatever way you look at it.
I rest my case. The fact you're saying this about a player after the mood three months ago supports this.
Saw some pictures of the new letter being put on the side of the Ponty End… fixed on to the Cladding… Cadden… it’s tenuous, but we’ve seen Cundy at Cundy Cross and I now feel that nothing is off the table…
I've no idea if hes a good signing or a bad signing. I've no idea whether he'll do well for us or not. Can we just wait and see him play for us before we hail it as an incredible signing or a dreadful one?
Absolutely not. Nail your colours to the mast now and then be vilified all season if you’re wrong, or be smug all season if you’re right.
I think those comments are quite certainly tongue in cheek, worst transfer window since the new owners came in, it's their 1st one
