Tesco / Heinz

Same in Wakey, everyone queuing for Morrisons, walk straight into Jacks, I think as long as you're prepared to be flexible an think about different meal options there's no need to go to a big supermarker other then on certain things. I don't think people are prepared to use their brains - a lot of people live on autopilot.

 

What happens when you've used your brains and use this Jacks place (never heard of it myself) or Aldi or Lidl, find you still can't afford it so go to a food bank and realise you can't afford the gas/electric to cook raw ingredients?

I think you're right about people in general though, they have a certain shopping habit and find it very difficult to change.

 

Couldn’t disagree more. I had to buy Heinz beans in lockdown as it was all they had, found them watery and horrible.

Honestly prefer aldi own to heinz. (Won’t have any other own brand but the aldi ones are ok). Branston is my bean of choice though…

 

It was created by Tesco to try and directly compete with Aldi & Lidl by replicating their business model. They scrapped it earlier this year. Most have since been rebranded to Tesco, but some have closed completely.

 

Just to expand the debate slightly, we buy our milk from the milkman that delivers it early am to the doorstep. It is more expensive this way but it works for us and keeps the milkman going. Socialism at it's best, just saying like.

I shop in M&S once or twice a week for a few bits. There are certain items that are just much better quality and worth paying that bit extra. I will add that I earn a decent salary and have no kids so I’ve probably got a bit more spare income than some.

I guess it depends on what you’re buying and if you value better ingredients. For example, the majority of M&S ready meals and pre-packed sandwiches use British chicken whereas the other supermarkets tend to use cheap, imported chicken from Thailand. Obviously some products at M&S are just the same as other supermarket own brands and can be bought elsewhere for cheaper.

 

If you think M&S is expensive, try going to Waitrose. I went in the other week, and it the prices were above M&S by £1-2 per item. I do regularly shop in M&S as its walking distance and the quality is usually better than Morrisons but Waitrose was another level entirely.

 

'whoops' shopping is what it's all about. Those yellow stickers draw me in like a seagull to fish and chips. I'm far from a fussy eater. The I'm a Celeb eating challenge, I'd pi55 it. Other day lambs heart and mash cost less than a quid. Fish is for nowt if you time your shopping right. Veg for next to nowt if you're up for making a stew. I could live easily on a quid a day food wise.

Last office I ran we chucked a fiver a week in and had brekkie and dinner for it. Pasta dishes, soups, fruit salads, smoothies, jacket spuds with chilli n cheese, toasties, cereal. It's easy if you think about it.

 

I used to like an M&S sandwich when I was younger. There didn't used to be a lot of choice for that style of sandwich back then but I must admit they were good. Don't know about the comparative quality these days as I don't buy them from anywhere anymore. I don't think I've ever had a ready meal in my entire life, unless you count pizza.

I do know that all Aldi's fresh meat is from the UK. I checked M&S when I was in the other day, and much of it wasn't.

Buy cannellini beans and make your own. Way tastier.

 

Heinz beans are pissy beans, hardly any taste to the juice not really a sauce and it doesn`t stick to the beans. Prefer Branston but have gone onto Asda `s own with a bit of ketchup in when needed.

Agreed. But they do a loaf (white or wholemeal) for 65p. No shrinkflation either its proper sized. Worth going in just for that. Also Sainsbury's are undercutting Tesco and even Lidl on some veg stuff like lettuce.

 

I don’t like Heinz but I can’t stand Branston, much too strong a taste. I used to really like HP but difficult to find now. Morrisons own are my new favourite.

 

We do our full shop at Morrisons, except for about a £100 shop (minus vouchers) once a month from Farmfoods. We buy multiples of stuff we use when it’s on offer and then it lasts us until it’s back on offer again. We’re lucky that we have a large pantry and can do that though. We’ve been waiting for laundry detergent to go back on offer for about 4 months (when we opened the last bottle that does 52 washes) and this week when we checked the price it’d gone up a quid. I’m hoping they’re just doing that thing where they increase the price for two weeks to make the offer seem ever better. We’ve got enough left for another few weeks so I’m going to keep playing price chicken for a little while longer.

Years ago HP were lovely, I got some not long ago from Herons, bought them all nostalgic, told my Mrs who’d never had them they’re better than any other - they are bloody awful now. Four pack and we ate one. The other three went in the food bank trolley.
