    Actually not too bad. Keeps BIK down for business users who might not be bothered, but allows the purchase of them later when sold into private sector. Realistically you’d pay the one-off fee and it remains with the car for life.

    However as the hardware is still present, it’s still a money making scheme in some respects.

    Some of the other add ons you can get from BMW is a one off £99 for an option to have the engine noise routed through your speakers inside the car....bizarre!

    Isn’t this actually a business offering choice?

    If you select the option at purchase there is no subscription. Suppose after purchase or a second hand buyer wants an accessory it’s possible to subscribe

    I had a BMW years back which has the first turbo M car. As the engine note was a bit tame the engine noise was enhanced through the speakers. Unfortunately when the software failed the car screamed like mad whilst doing around 20mph driving off the estate.

    But all the hardware is there, so BMW have already incurred the cost and it's just spiteful greed. I hope some people figure out how to hack it.

    I'm also laughing at fake engine noise through the speakers, I never knew that was a thing. One step above driving around going "brum brum brum" to yourself I guess.

    Its an interesting point you make regarding engine noise as many manufacturers have created 'fake' noise to appease drivers. My current car has a button which essentially opens valves on the exhaust which change the note of the engine sound. Again all false but to appease drivers who like the noise of their engine.

    I'm going to invent a car with a speedo dial which reads the actual speed plus 20, so people can look at that and think they're going proper fast. Based on the engine noise thing it seems it would sell shitloads.

    Obviously those of us who grew up with a tin bath, an outside toilet, and no central heating won't be paying BMW £15 a month to have our arses warmed up.

    Oh no - no, no, no! If you sell the car you have to remove your subscription. The next poor sod who buys it from you then has to pay to reactivate it.

    Absolute swindle and should be banned.

    What about the partially sighted and hard of hearing pedestrians? Stop, look... What a world!

    Edit: I understand you're advocating for noisy engines by the way, which is a good thing. My point is about the modern silent model. The more popular they become, the more pedestrian injuries we will see, I'm sure. They're so quiet!

    They stopped at the back end of last year and started enabling them so maybe it didn't work very well? It was a £300 quid (ish) one off cost for heated rear seats and steering wheel.

    Definitely a useful thing with an electric or hybrid. In my old hybrid, I had 2 or 3 occasions where pedestrians walked on me because it was in electric mode and they didn't hear the car.

    Well it’s still in the upgrades on mine…. Although it’s a one off £180.

    To be honest I thought atvthectimevtheyvwere robbing gets, all the elements must be there, I’m just activating the switch. Plus it eats the battery when on so really not worth it.

    I guess it's a way of saving on production costs. Make every car identical and then disable the features which haven't been selected. I suppose it's more cost effective than stopping production to ensure one car has certain features, and the next doesn't.

    You wouldn't have to stop a production line to change a heated seat to a non-heated one. Pretty much all vehicles are customised as they go through the factory.
