    There was a full on fun fair setup first thing yesterday but there was a safety issue that was outside the clubs control and they packed up and left

    In my opinion they should have back up plans in place for that. Maybe not a full funfair but back up entertainment at least. They certainly should have communicated the change to fans instead of trying to just hide the fact which ultimately leads to disappointed fans

    As someone who runs, or at least helps run, the fanzone (sorry, I don't know exactly what everyone does or how it's run so not sure if anyone is in charge specifically) what physical things would you say would improve the fanzone? Is there anything specific that fans could try to raise funds for that would improve it even more?

    I dunno its an unlikely scenario to plan for and a lot of space to fill. I think if there were more stalls for kids/tombolas/related local businesses and such like that was seen at some of the previous open days it might have been less of an issue.
    I think people may not have been aware of all the stuff going on in the academy for kids
    I didnt realise the extent of it until last night and I was down there most of the day.
    Incorporating access to the stadium with tours etc always seemed to be a winner on open day but I did like the idea of the friendly being part of it.
    Access to the players for autographs was always a big part of the openday but that wasn't advertised well enough and I guess plenty of kids had gone home by 8pm when it actually happened
    Definitely some lessons learned but there are positives also. Plenty of people enjoyed the day.

    I definitely agree that the late friendly perhaps wasn't the best idea as it kept people out of the stadium. A 12:30 kick off would have been better and encouraged people to stay afterwards. The esports tournament was a good idea though and it sounds like the activities that were put on went down well.

    Totally agree on the comms, but not sure about the backup plans. Only so much they can do. Not really practical to have stuff on standby, just in case some totally unexpected thing happens.

    I’ll also said one size doesn’t fit all for feedback and viewing something, and highlighted that the kids entertainment needed to improve. There were hundreds of kids there who had a great day out - you can’t just ignore that because it didn’t tick the boxes for you. I also said exactly the same as you in that it should have been 500-600 staying behind.

    Depends what you class as backup really. A full funfair isn't something reasonable but setting up some extra goalposts etc for kids to play in would help instead of the big empty area.

    Comms is the main issue though. They were absolutely awful in general yesterday but to be honest from an information point of view they have been for a long time. In terms of engaging communication and fun interesting stuff they're brilliant but information was it's awful

    Disagree here. You can’t really plan for a scenario where you lose your ‘rides’ an hour before people arrive after they’ve all been set up.

    Maybe if it all goes to pot during the week, but not at 10:30am on a Saturday.

    Probably right. It’s more of a season launch day really but as with most things names just stick even when formats and setups change.

    Wouldn’t surprise me if it changes.

    Agree. They haven't got unlimited resources at the football club and I'd imagine with all the things that were going on they were pretty stretched without the spanner in the works an hour or two before the first fans arrived.

    When the plans didn't work out the club should have told fans on the official site and social media that things that were planned would no longer be happening. That way people could decide if they still wanted to go before they had already set off.

    Collins and Walton were happily signing autographs during the warm up in the Ponty. I didn't recognise a lot of the kids and parents so either they usually sit in a different stand or else they'd come especially for the open day. I thought there was a nice atmosphere last night.

    Thanks to all who've offered feedback, constructive or otherwise, it's all taken onboard and as this summer as a whole proves - things are acted upon.

    I'm not going to spend my Sunday afternoon in the sunshine debating anything, or apportioning blame for any of the issues raised. But they'll be noted, and it all discussed in meetings next week, as we evaluate what went right, what didn't and how to improve in future.

    But I wanted to thank all who attended, and especially those involved in the different areas of Oakwell that were up and running in the morning and packing up as it became dark at the end of a long day in difficult conditions. Criticism or not, it was a day like no other in terms of the scale of the event. Games involving the Academy, Ladies and First Team throughout the day. Free to season ticket holders. Free fun and games in the indoor centre, packed with kids enjoying the day on inflatables and meeting Toby Tyke. The free e-sports tournament in the Kids Club. The stalls and FanZone at the rear of the East Stand, with fabulous musical entertainment, games for the kids, artwork for sale, information points for Weston Park and the Air Ambulance service. Free beer from Club Partner, Athletic Brewing. Ice Cream. Guests in the shape of Kayode Odejayi, former teammate of Michael Duff and once a Red himself, then the big reveal of our latest signing, live on stage, followed by the new home kit reveal.

    An unprecedented day to be quite honest. But naturally, it wasn't all plain sailing and so there's lots to take away from it for future events.

    Thank you to those who came up and spoke to myself and other colleagues, to pass on their thanks for the work we've been doing since the end of last season to try and reconnect the club with its fanbase/community. I've never known an off-season like it. Fans playing on Oakwell, shooting for your seat, ground tours every weekend, so many events catering for supporters and with another to come next Sunday with our season launch. The effort has well and truly been there, and for many of us, to the detriment of our personal lives.

    Seeing the smiling faces of hundreds of children yesterday was what it's all about.

    I also feel that those who attended the first team fixture will have certainly got a feel for what we are going to be all about on the pitch this season, but hopefully with added goals!

    Once again, thanks to those who attended, to the people involved (including those also giving up their free time voluntarily) and to the BBS for the feedback.

    BBQ time.

    On another note WTAF is up with bins just walked through the East stand car park it’s disgraceful absolutely loads of cans, lost lager cups bottles etc
