    Dear Gareth,

Some advice for free. If you are lucky enough to possess one of the most talented squads in world football, the most effective way of winning a match is setting your players up to win the match. You're welcome.

    Regards,

    Sarina

Nope - the tried and trusted way is to play scared. Look at the success the last 40 odd years has brought...... oh wait a minute!

Not sure why there's a need for a comparison. We were minutes away from going out of the tournament last night and other than a couple of wild swings at goal I didn't feel like we ever looked like scoring.

A very tired performance if you ask me, but how much better we are individually than Spain came through in the end. There's an argument Sarina could have learnt from Gareth by not playing the same XI in all the group games.

Spain were absolutely excellent and our girls were far below their best. But they kept playing, and clearly had a coherent plan. Digging results out when you're up against it is the mark of a class team. But in any case, I just think that the way the team is set up is a breath of fresh air. It definitely beats the "playing with fear" plan against any decent opponent, as mentioned by another poster, and that's why I'm making a comparison. Both the men's and women's squads are among the best in the world right now, but it feels like the men still don't quite believe that they can compete on equal terms with the world's best - the Euro 2020 final being a case in point. Exactly why that is, I don't know. Set-up, too much respect for opponents, massive media pressure? I thought that Leah Williamson's post-match interview was extremely illuminating - saying that at no point did they ever believe they'd lose the game.

Spain were excellent but if you're going to compare to men's football it would be like England playing against Wales and needing a last minute equaliser to force extra time. No shame in it, but one team clearly better than the other 9 times out of 10.

Italy were a monster of a team at the Euros and we seem to quickly forget that. Losing on the last kick of the game after 120 minutes. Could we have pushed more at 1-0? Maybe. Would it have definitely led to us winning? No guarantees at all.

I do know the ladies looked tired last night and that can't have been helped by not rotating during the group games. Summary is, they can all learn from each other.

I think we lost because of three crap penalty kicks.

And John Stones not being two inches taller for the winning header in extra time.

Great game, thoroughly enjoyed it but we would have won it more easily if the striker hadn’t kept running off side.

All fair points, although I think that Spain ladies are relatively much higher up the pecking order than Wales in the men's.

Don't get me wrong, I think that Southgate has generally done an excellent job, a lot more good than bad. I just wish he wasn't so risk-averse, because we've actually got the players to approach games with a bit more freedom than we are doing.

I think Wales is probably a fair comparison given there's less ladies teams of tournament quality. Winning last night would have been an upset.

I do get the risk-averse comments. Completely valid. I just think tournament football at International level is different and if you go in too gung-ho then you're at risk of being picked off by some of the quality that exists. It isn't like a league season where you can make up for it over the next 5/6 games. Saying that though, I do think there's a balance to be had. How we setup to play Germany was fantastic to me, matching them up out wide, nullifying the threat, and then going on the attack to finish them off in the second half. Genius by Southgate in that one.

Loko - not sure what point you are making - you are confabulating two different things. England Women and Spain Women very close together in the FIFA Rankings.
    Men's FIFA ranking Cymru 19 - England 5

    Big W C game 7pm Qatar 29 November !

That was my thinking, although I'm assuming what Loko meant was that the strength in depth in the men's game means that 5th v 19th is still likely to be a balanced, competitive game. Whereas in the ladies' event, such a difference in rankings would lead to a horrendous mismatch.

    Edit - Germany v Austria - 5th v 21st
    Sweden v Belgium - 2nd v 19th

    Let's see what happens!

Exactly that. You only have to look at Hungary in 37th to see how much deeper the quality of national sides runs in the men's game - for now.

Let's see what happens in the two quarter finals where there's a huge difference in rankings. Interesting that England are only ranked 8th in the women's, whereas the men are 5th.

Rankings are weird in general aren't they? Never fully understood how they work and can be completely influenced by how many games you play, who you play, when you play, etc.

England ladies are definitely rated as a top three team in the world right now.

I remember FIFA assigning a shed load of ranking points to some crappy CONCACAF tournament - the Gold Cup or something similar, which led to the USA being ranked 4th in the world.

To be fair, they were missing their two best players last night. Could have been a very different story if they'd been playing. I also thought some of their manager's tactical decisions were quite questionable in the later stages.

    thanks MT

agree with Loko -- FIFA rankings are weird things! - comparing the Belgian teams - Men 2nd - Women 19th in the rankings.
    Swedish teams Men 20th - Women 2nd.

o/t In the World Cup Group Stage - England ranked 5 in the World - USA 14 - Cymru 19 - Iran 23. Should be walk in the park for Gareth's boys ???
