Particularly as the values of player sales are hugely inflated by Darragh MacAnthony. He claims they receive far more than they do. Why? Well, a number of reasons: fan appeasement for one, self promotion another, and for the club to gain the reputation that they don't sell players on the cheap. The latter of these clearly works.
I was responding to your sarcastic comment indicating it would be desirable to end up like Derby. You weren't suggesting in that post there was an inbetween.
No background In football mate, just my opinions combined with a few snippets I get told now and again.
I’d guess the two main differences between us and Peterborough are it’s likely their wages were less than ours last season and they are very public about transfers or even potential ones where as we are not.
I see where your coming from . But football clubs are hardly queuing up to buy our crown jewels. Luton Town Blackburn Rovers. The season before would have been far different. It's a pity we couldn't sell the 2 misfit strikers with 9 year contracts. Pity is no fecker wants em
We've a number of aspects that have to be factored into our situation but one of the most glaringly depressing ones are the number of players we'd ideally like to move on but can't. I suspect in an ideal world we'd like to have offers for Cole, Leya Iseka, Oulare, Thomas, Oduor. Maybe even Benson and Kane. But at this point, to offload any of them would mean us having to pay them off to a degree or come to an arrangement with another club where there is likely no fee, and maybe some contribution to wages to the player. I suspect any that Duff thinks are beyond working with will be shipped out on loan somewhere to reduce our wage losses until we get to a point where their contracts lapse and we write off yet another transfer fee. Our alchemy project has been an unmitigated disaster.
Duff in todays Chronicle: “You don’t want to lose good players but it’s where we are financially and there’s not a lot I can do about it. “If the right offers come in for players, we have to sell them. “It’s not a case of wanting to sell them. I knew that walking in and I have to crack on with the job.” No promises broken, Duff knew what he was signing up for, thank god it didn’t put him off! Enjoyed the read btw, great writing.
I'm going to politely disagree with a lot of the assumptions you've made, as I did last season. Fair play in being on the money last year, but to write off the vast majority of our new signings before a ball has even been kicked is baffling to me, in my opinion. I could understand your reservations about them last season, but we've tried to address the obvious lack of experience in the team this year with the majority of our signings. Do I think we'll bounce straight back? No, I'm hopeful for a top 10 finish, but wouldn't be surprised if we finished mid-table. But this season was always going to be one for rebuilding. And I don't agree with a lot of the flack that Khaled receives either. Last season he sat in the background, but I do think he's tried to do a lot, both on and off the field, to fix the bonds broken with the fans this season. I think the more pessimistic amongst us though are just finding it difficult to accept that after last year.
To be fair, the board have said publicly, that players will have to be sold. And the number that have to be sold will depend on how much we can get for players. I think the lack of bids for Helik and Styles has taken the club by a bit of surprise, given we have already signed replacements, and led to the need to sell more players.
I think the lack of bids for them has taken us all by surprise, Heliks injury won’t have helped. The sooner those 2 go the better position we will be in to reject bids for others.
Exactly. If bids don't come in for them, it makes it more difficult to keep hold of Andersen and Collins.
