I reckon that it's actually the bigger clubs who make less money per shirt. They get £100m for signing the rights over to Nike etc and in return they get a modest amount per shirt. Nike make a fortune because THEY sell shirts in every sports shop in the world. It just makes little sense for smaller clubs to adopt the same policy because why would puma essentially buy our shirts only for us to only sell them in a club shop at oakwell? It's far more likely that we retain the rights to our shirts and puma is simply the manufacturer for us

It was on the BBC news yesterday morning, they were discussing that only forty odd clubs had received shirt orders from the far east & actually it was reported that the mark up for clubs was in the region of 7% per shirt not £7 which is even less , the money is made by sponsorship deals related to volume of shirts sold etc , so to me an £8 discount offer is very generous.

The season ticket brought the price down to £40. The £7 profit was at £40 RRP.

Shirt prices at £48 is an increase isn’t it? Likely linked to inflation and cost of goods increases.

Surely it makes it harder to get a shirt sponsor if shirts are been sold without one?

You’d be wanting the asking price to come down massively if loads of fans already have a shirt without a sponsor.

That 7% figure quoted on the BBC was a specific contract - Man Utd’s I think they said. the deal they have is £75 million up front from the kit manufacturer and then 7% on every shirt sold as well.

Thanks for confirming that. Sounds similar to when we handed the club shop over. Up front investment and minimal to no benefit from any merch sales.

Exactly , highlighting what small return there actually is on just the shirt but the profits are made from the sponsor deals.

Eyup Gally, the problem for me, and doubtless others, is that I didn’t get the chance to gamble, as I had presumed the voucher would be good for when the shirts came out and didn’t know there was a deadline until after the deadline had passed. Had I known, I would have pre-ordered one of them, knowing that the people in the club shop would have happily swapped it if I preferred the other one, or even reimbursed me if I didn’t like any of them.

I accept that the deadline date was written in the email, but I made the mistake of presuming the deadline date would at least be after the sodding shirts came out! Over the past few years, when we got a shirt as part of the season ticket package, we didn’t have to choose blind, we could wait till we saw them, so it’s a bit silly to do it this way now and I can’t help feeling that they were hoping people like me would make the assumption I did. And after the voucher book we got last season that was a bit rubbish and wasn’t what we expected it to be I’ll treat any future ‘offers’ with a degree of scepticism.

In a way, the two offers matched last season’s two managers. Promised loads, but when it came down to it…

Showing everyone what all the kits look like and then giving people X amount of time to use the discount voucher would have been the way to go.

Instead it was gamble that you'd like the shirt so you get it cheaper. If you don't swap it which wasn't given as something we could do when the offer was promoted and would result in club staff having more to do.

I'm not sure the club can be blamed for stupidity Paul ;) Seriously though, I'm not sure what comms there were around the deadline to be honest as I didn't take a lot of notice

Last year the early bird ended at the end of April and the shirt was unveiled in mid June I think so is it the case people were able to get an early view?

Good to see you posting again though. Hope you're doing well and hope to see you in the new season!

I’m okay thanks. Well, okay in a ‘just waiting for the surgeons to review my CT scans to see whether they’re going to whip my gallbladder out’ sort of way. I spent the first half of adulthood working in hospitals and the second half on the receiving end! But crikey, the past couple of days have been painful and I have a very high pain threshold.

If I do have surgery though I should have enough time to recover before the Cheltenham match, when I’ll hopefully be able to pick up the ‘quite different’ away shirts I’ve given in and ordered for me and the boy.

Ah **** that doesn't sound good. Hopefully, you make a quick enough recovery for the Cheltenham game. Hope everything goes smoothly and hope to see you then!
