Just rewatched the Calzaghe documentary on Prime. What a fighter, definitely my all time favourite. His ridiculous hand speed, the 12 round masterclass over Lacey; pulling the fight back against Kessler; triumphing over Hopkins spoiling tactics; toying with Roy Jones Jnr. All with busted hands.
Always thought he was very good but carefully managed. As time went on I realised I was wrong! I was quite dismissive of the Kessler and Hopkins wins thinking they were past their best but look at what they achieved after they’re actually fantastic wins / performances! Crap human being mind.
Don’t know much about him but his record speaks for itself. Probably greatest British boxer of all time.
Behind lennox. Lennox is my joint fav with froch and prince naz. Lennox was amazing arguably the best heavyweight ever, lost 2 only in a great and tough era and rematched them both and won. Lennox was truely amazing.
Crap human being might be a bit harsh, but whenever I’ve seen he often comes across as a bit of a dick. Probably not uncommon though in that game.
A brilliant fighter with a brilliant story. That tiny gym & the success they had was phenomenal. His dad Enzo wasn’t even a proper boxing trainer & learned on the job. He played a huge part in making Enzo Maccarinelli & Gavin Rees world champs & got loads out of Gary Lockett & Bradley Pryce & helped Nathan Cleverly on his way to world titles. I always remember watching a clip of Dereck Chisora going down to spar Maccarinelli & he couldn’t believe how hard they trained & how ramshackle the gym was.
I always thought he came across as a decent guy. Tried to keep his private life private & didn’t really get involved in trash talk
Joe, Naz, Lennox and Fury. We've been blessed on these shores in my lifetime. Special, special fighters.
I though the same. Didn't want to question why in case he told me something I didn't know that spoils one of my sporting heroes
