    Probably a sensible move, the amazing thing is that this government actually has a plan....
    Second thoughts, it's probably an old plan which they found in a Downing street dustbin, written 30 years ago.
    Like the one for pandemics that they ignored 2 and a half years ago.

    I'm a little (a lot) confused. What's sensible about turning off the power to our homes and places of work during the darkest and coldest month of the year?

    Yes you're right, but Ted Heath did it in 1972. I remember doing my homework by candle light, at least we had a coal fire....

    I would think that there are long standing plans which deal with situations where shutdowns may be the only option left, not that the current situation involves problems in power generation.

    same as the power cuts in the Seventies you have to nurse the supplies that you have .
    If you know it’s coming at least you can try and prepare for it

    Isn't the sensible plan to build infrastructure so this is not required? We've loads of gas but we export most of it. Building a place to store it sounds sensible. Exporting it all then turning the power off sounds beyond stupid.

    Apparently the Tories scrapped a lot of storage to save money. Italy has 18 times more storage capacity than we do for electricity.

    Storing it is sensible. We used to be able to do that, but remarkably mothballed most of it.so have little storage left.

    Talk of building piers with storage tanks stored on ships with liquified gas imported from America has been mentioned.

    There were plans proposed to the Labour government in the 1990s to expand the gas storage tanks in East Yorkshire, where the undersea pipes come ashore. They and subsequent government's have repeatedly refused to commence this work. The purpose is so that there is enough gas to last most of a extra cold winter.

    Well I'm not going to congratulate a government, in power for over 12 years, who have failed to ensure there is adequate infrastructure to meet the energy requirements of the populace because they've come up with a backup plan to turn my power off. Congratulations is the last thing on my mind. I'm erring on the side of a proper good shoeing.

    Absolutely nothing sensible about turning off everyone's power. It's fecking 2022 not 1902

    When I was a kid I used to see big gas storage things at the side of the road. What happened to them? Why is it I can only get grants for more officiant boilers and insulation etc if I'm on benefits? Why can't minimum wage people get these grants too? Surely it would cost far less I the long run to help everyone who needs it become more energy efficient rather than just a few. Not a dog at benefit claimants but at the absurdity of limiting who can get help despite it meaning more power is used.

    Why aren't there grants NOW for solar? Why the **** is our go to answer nuclear that will be ready in 2050? Why not solar NOW?
    Give free solar to people today and I reckon there'll be a half a homes signed up before the end of August. That's a lot of power saved

    Oh dear turning the clock back 50 years. I can remember getting home after work just before 6. Then on the stroke of 6 the power went off. Not to come on again until 9.
    Mid winter and my mother probably had a salad laid out for my tea. And a glass of milk instead of a cup of tea. And my gran wrapped up in a quilt. Oh happy days.

    No Jay. We lived in a multi storey flat. All electric.
    Thinking about it mate if was absolutely grim.

    Thinking back like I was only 15 or 16 and personally I just took it in my stride. Probably met mates on the street and complete darkness. But some memories remain.
