I look at our team and I think it's pretty solid from defence and midfield. However, I don't see any guile and goal threat in there. I'm concerned we're going to have a similar season to last in terms of goals scored unless we sign an attacking midfielder and some strikers.
Luke Thomas looked good going forward last Saturday and Norwood put himself about a bit. It looked better than most games last season already, so I'm willing to give them more time to gel. That said, I feel we need another striker as it looks like Iseka is off
Thomas has always looked decent going forwards, it's his end product that has never existed, either in assists or goals. Hopefully the goal on Saturday gives him some confidence and belief. Although on replay it definitely took a significant deflection.....
I think he needs to play tonight or at least come off the bench and give it a go. If not, time to cut our losses. Disclaimer - not seen any pre-match build up comments so apologies if he is already out or anything.
I just don't think we create enough chances. It would be nice to watch a game and even if we lost come away thinking if we'd taken our chances we'd have got something from that.
Duff said Iseka was fit and available for the Cheltenham game and said his matchday squad was based on what he saw in training. The fact he didn't even make the bench on Saturday tells us all we need to know. We're trying to get rid without a doubt. Shame as he's our most talented forward and ought to thrive at L1 level.
What do we think about the likelihood of success for Tedic ? It doesn’t seem he’s a prolific scorer so is a target man going to fit in ? City gave him a 3 yr deal two years ago so he must have something to offer
Duff said he was fit and added that the players not making the squad are those not putting in the effort in training. Iseka didn't make the squad.
I think Duff is being coy about him and he's going to be our plan B when fit. Can see us launching it if all else fails in certain games unless we can find some creativity. I just feel since the beginning of last season we've become a bit predictable and boring to watch.
I get that, but tonight is an EFL Cup game. Scope for a different squad. If he gets in and smashes it, fair play. If he doesn't make this squad, then adios.
We created a lot more on Saturday though, but we're still short. We weren't even getting in to decent positions last season but Williams/Styles/Cadden were really threatening out wide on the overlap. Aitchison was really unlucky not to put us 1-0 up in the first half. Better balls in to the box would help, as well as having some variety in the forward line as well. Norwood was making runs and darts in the box that was unsettling defenders and freeing up space, but the final ball wasn't there. I think that will come though once we're up to speed. Too many long, slow diagonal passes at times, but some great football in other spots. Solid base to build from but a tough run of fixtures after Bristol Rovers.
It might be a potential new signing unless the team gels and Norwood becomes the main man. I haven't given up on Cole though with the right service.
Exactly …. so it’s absolute priority to sign someone because if our top scorer is 8 or 9 then we won’t be in top six
I think we'll get more stable and solid as the season progresses, though I'm partly expecting Mads to move on if an offer comes in, so we'd then have to rework the back line again. I liked the look of McCarthy though. Even though we kept a clean sheet, Cheltenham got at our back line quite easily at times, and they did create two chances that they really should have scored from. But I think we can tighten that as the midfield settles and takes on board instruction better. There were certainly positives. We controlled the ball quite well and got out of some tricky positions and we did get some balls into the box, Aitchison really should have scored in the first half too. We also had better movement too and I always think it makes a difference when one of your midfield can pick up the ball and drive at the opposition, so well done to Thomas for showing a willingness to do that, he deserved the bit of luck of the deflection. It's very much a work in progress though and the squad makeup will be dictated by who we're able to get out of the building. But so far, I'd say we've got what we deserved. A loss and a win. I'm happy with that with yet more upheaval.
be nice stephen if we created some chances for the strikers to score some goals at the moment there is nothing coming from the wide areas if you were a striker where would you want to receive the ball, myself i would like the ball coming from wide so i am facing the opposition keeper you have more chance of scoring than receiving the ball with your back to goal especially with two big defenders marking you
