Ended up chatting with a Leicester fan in Heckmondwike today. Had a cracking chat too! Joachim's goal in the Cup, bettered by Owen Blackadder's equaliser! We agreed to disagree lol, got another one in and reminisced; just how it should be! Memories of Steve Walsh elbow on Taggart at Oakwell early 90's. Same bloke getting Cooper sent off at Filbert Street when were 2-0 up. Many more memories regarding Leicester; to me, our games with them were always lively/entertaining...
Away to Leicester at Filbert St wasone of my first away game outside local matches at Millmoor, the Sty, Brammall lane etc. Went of a footy special train - remember those - we were marched under police escort to the ground and back - oh and we lost 1-0 - might have been 1981 but it was certainly a long time ago
I lived in Leicester from 1977-1983; first for college and then work. I used to walk past the old Filbert Street ground to get to Leicester Polytechnic (now De Montfort University). I remember attending a midweek night game once, and obviously I went in the away end. My house was in one direction, and the train station the other. I was halfway to the train station before I could convince a copper I lived there, as I was been herded onto the St. Pancras to Sheffield train. Memories!
Loved a visit to Filbert Street back in its day. Remember some cracking games there apart from the one that saw us relegated from the Prem in 98, obviously.
That 2-1 FA Cup win was my outstanding visit there. The excitement as Steve Lowndes went on that long run before sticking it in the net at the far end from us was tremendous. Quagmire of a pitch so it’s amazing that he kept going that distance.
One of my top 5 goals I’ve witnessed came vs Leicester - and it’s not the Archdeacon one! Martin Bullock scored an absolute worldy against them at oakwell - must have been around ‘93? Picked up a throw-in just inside their half, looked like he took it passed 2-3 and smashed it into the top corner from the edge of the box in the blink of an eye. Reight goal.
I suspect I've mentioned it before, but I bumped into Agnew and Walsh in town that night and had a chat with them. Walsh said they were told to back off and let Bullock shoot as they didn't think he had a shot on him! Agree with you, incredible goal and a fantastic game too. For a few years, Leicester seemed to be a game that had some controversy or we were a bit hard done by. Remember Kelly getting 2 as they came back to draw and David Oldfield was taking the corners that were well over the white line, one of which led to a goal. It was also strange that I seemed to meet so many people at that time and a little bit later that were from Leicester who went on to become good friends. Odd how life throws up these coincidences.
2-0 in 2013, Schmeichel had a worldy should have won by more. OG and O’Grady for us. Kane and Vardy on the bench for Leicester that night.
Remember going to 2-2 draw in 1990 with my ex wife. Filbert Street was one of those grounds at the time, surrounded by terrace houses. Never been to the new one.
Only time I've been to their new ground was when we beat them with our Loanee Drinkwater running the game - he impressed them so much they bought hima few days later as we were still in the January transfer window it was rather annoying
I was due to go to Filbert Street in the Cup, but it was snowed off and couldn't make the new date :-(
89/90 ..... 2-1 win was well memorable! We were at the wrong end of the league but, the FA Cup being what it was back then, saw 3,500 Reds venture down. A 2-1 win on a typically muddy pitch saw us through! Personally; whatever Machin's errors were, this day along with the 4-1 West Ham and Leeds double in 1990, let's me think of him fondly
