He’s been a disgrace all week! Become a laughing stock in boxing circles the last couple of years. Although not quite David Haye levels.
Had it 115-113 Usyk. But it was easier than that scorecard suggests. Awful fight in all honesty. Not a Wilder Fury 3 contest with knockdowns galore. That’s two fights they’ve had without a knockdown. Pretty dull and on both occasions, the quicker, more superior boxer edged it, but comfortably. Dunno where Joshua’s power has gone. The post-fight stuff from AJ was embarrassing. Not the in-ring speech itself. Nice words. But the nonsense before it and the awkwardness of it all. Let’s see if Fury has genuinely retired. WBC decision next week. For the record, I believe he’d beat Usyk. As for AJ, it would be embarrassing to watch, not even close. Up the Tykes x
All pundits, ex boxers etc gave AJ 3 at best, I’m sure they arnt getting confused with amateur boxing. I’d give him 2 and being generous. Stood in middle of ring like a tree with a bee buzzing round him.
Knockdowns make more memorable fights and keep the casuals on their toes, but I couldn’t keep my eyes of it. Don’t think I blinked for most of the rounds. The skill set and footwork displayed by Usyk was unreal. He’s like a Duracell bunny that just won’t stop and makes it impossible for you to feel comfortable throwing a combination (if you’re AJ). But AJ contributed as well with his own movement and forward foot stance which made it a lot closer than the first fight. Fury is too big, too skilful, and will be too far out of reach. Usyk won four of his rounds boxing like Calzaghe without any of the power punches and that just won’t work against Tyson. I think you’ll get to see Fury one last time at least. Let’s get AJ back demolishing Whyte, and then have the AJ/Fury fight next Summer. We deserve it. Also, and I said this earlier in the week, but the microphone should be nowhere to be seen after a fight. Agree with Belles on this one.
Poor fight? A part time watcher of boxing would probably say that, but the purists know that was technically beautiful by Usyk and I loved every second of it.
That isn’t true though. Those on Sky did. 115/116 is fair. The over the top criticism not acknowledging how hard Usyk had to work for that is becoming a bit laughable. Gareth Davies had it 5-5 after 10 and Steve Kim 3-3 after six. Dan Rafael 116-112. Same for Mike Coppinger.
Usyk wasn’t at his best tonight. He was better in the first fight. But he looked beautiful as you say, at times. Because he’s fighting Joshua. A big stiff robot with zero head movement. Who no longer throws his shots without fear. It wasn’t a great watch for the casual. I’m far from casual. I found it dull. I wish AJ had shown the same fire during the fight that he showed when hissy fitting post fight.
That tenth round from Usyk was one of the best in recent times and of this era. How he came back from what he took in the 9th to completely flip the fight back in his favour was incredible. He’s a special talent, definitely Pound for Pound #1, and nailed on Hall of Famer.
Enjoyed the first fight immensely, not so much this one. There were eight rounds of not very much and I thought the scores were level. Then Joshua opened up in the 9th and looked like he could genuinely win it. But in the tenth it was Joshua who came out exhausted not Usyk and for the next couple of rounds Usyk was ferocious and I was surprised Joshua got through. Last round was about even, so Usyk by one round. However, judging it simply on rounds doesn't necessarily give the full picture. Usyk was comprehensively better than Joshua in the 10th and 11th and I didn't think there was any doubt who won the fight. I struggle to understand Joshua's tactics. Usyk has more stamina, undoubtedly due to the energy required for Joshua to move those muscles around the ring. This was clearly established in the first fight and nothing was ever going to change that. If Joshua waits until the 9th before really going for it, the first 8 rounds have already taken their toll and he's then exhausted for the following round. If you're exhausted stood in front of Usyk then Usyk will take you apart. This happened, just like it happened in the first fight. Joshua had to put Usyk down in the first 6 rounds. He may not have the skill to do that, I don't know, but he certainly has the strength and power to do it. That he didn't try I find very disappointing. That's easy for me to say, sat here, perfectly safe. I wouldn't, if the strategy failed, be a spent force with half the bout remaining, stood toe to toe with a man about to tear me to pieces. But I believe such tactics would have given Joshua a chance of winning while those he chose did not. The tactics he chose have, over 24 rounds, ensured his health remains in tact after facing a truly awesome boxer. Ultimately that is more important than winning but it also ensured he couldn't win.
It wasn’t that Joshua came out exhausted in the 10th. It was Usyk coming out completely rehabilitated compared to how he ended the 9th. That was such a turnaround and one that only the truly elite fighters can put together. The game plan question is an easy one for me, you, those at ringside to question. Plenty of times I wanted him to pull the trigger and he seemed hesitant, but it really isn’t as simple as that. Usyk literally didn’t stand still for six rounds, and those sideways movements and pitter patter jabs, don’t hurt but they completely throw a fighter off. What AJ did do well was control the middle of the ring a lot more this fight. He spent more of it on the front foot and he hurt Usyk more than anyone ever has. Honestly thought he had him in the 9th round, but worth remembering his tactics up until then made that possible. He doesn’t lose any credibility in defeat for me, purely from a boxing perspective. We have to be careful not to lament AJ’s performance too much where it looks like we’re ignoring the class that is Usyk and how he makes it look difficult. Always having to worry about his movement, his flick of the backhand jab, and wasting your own energy throwing punches that don’t meet their target.
"I don't know what's going on in Ukraine but it's not nice" Amazing insight AJ, pulled on my heartstrings with that.
Soz but am not in the Usyk love in camp. for most if the fight he ran around throwing volleys of arm punches that wouldn't floor mi granny. at best it was like watching a wasp annoying someone having lunch outside. AJ no longer has the speed or power of 5 years ago coupled with a fear of getting banged on the chin makes him perfect for Usyk at this level. Sadly have to tell the over the top commentary team Usyk is not Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali and Tyson rolled into one and the first time he fights a good quick hard hitting hungry heavyweight he'll get beat..I think Wilder would beat him in 7 rounds.. That said AJ only won at best 3 rounds and certainly lost the fight.
Usyk is a great boxer and hard to tag. Aj isnt a gd boxer hes a gd brawler well he used to be. Usyk problem is he wont stop many heavyweights as hes a cruiserweight and doesnt punch hard enough at top end of heavyweight divsion . He punched chisora and delboy jist kept coming. Sp you will get same result usyk wins on pts every fight.
