As far as I can guess, you’re referring to the Syrian refugees (not asylum seekers). The problem with your Ukraine analogy is that the war they’re escaping from is between Assad’s forces who murder, torture, imprison without trial and generally terrify the population, and the Islamic fundamentalist group ISIS who blow people up, chop hands off, behead, ride roughshod over human rights etc etc. So my question would be, which side should they fight for?

Just watched channel 4 news, who aren't known for right wing bias. Record number for one day today, 1300 crossed. Of those just under half were reported as being Albanian males. Albania is currently negotiating for EU membership so I'm at a loss at what they seeking asylum from. It may be an untypical day, it may not. I watch channel 4 cos it's not a government propaganda platform and I tend to believe them on this. I think there is little chance of a candid and sensible debate on the issue as both sides seem pretty polarised at let them all in, let nobody in. A shame really, I think those in genuine need will get a raw deal and the opportunists do exist in whatever numbers get everyone else a bad name and we don't seem anywhere near finding a happy medium.

 

Humane treatment and a fair hearing according to law is all I would seek. Summary deportation and exclusion from due process is not the mark of a civilized major nation state.

They're not immigrants they are asylum seekers.

 

Pretty much the same life as i had before to be honest. So, no benefits but as i like to think, 2 to 3 years down the road I'm pretty much sure we'll have a better perspective ;-)
As a side note; my other half works with a company that exports a great deal. She reckons there's not much difference regarding paperwork. The French live up to their stereotype as do the Germans
