There's also a Starbucks next to Stairfoot roundabout, plus one at Birdwell/Hoyland at the end of Dearne Valley Parkway.

As for Greggs, there's one already at the bottom of Old Mill Lane, so also putting one in the Peel Centre seems a bit close. I suppose it's further away than the ones in the town centre are from each other.

All are operated by the same franchisee - 23.5 Degrees. There must be a lot of money in coffee!

Most of the KFC’s, Taco Bells, Dunkin Donuts, and a fair few Costa’s in Barnsley and a lot of the surrounding areas are the same franchisee too - QFM. It’s why they’re always grouped together in the same locations. The owner must be raking it in!

Think they've just hit 50. Might be wrong though as hasn't been mentioned in my daily morning briefing for a while.

The margin on coffee is ridiculous. Talking pennies.

But there's little loyalty to coffee shops and just brands, but even that is fairly promiscuous. That's why you'll see so many within the same vicinity - it's not like a pub where people will walk passed one to get to one they like. It's all about convenience.

Think it’s done itself a bit of reputational damage over the last few years though. Plastics, franchising, Covid support and user data tracking all pretty $hit. Dunno how much of that has translated to how it runs it’s shops over here.

Wow really? I always thought there would be a big margin on coffee etc? How are all these turning a profit then? Is it on selling other products?

Heard today price of coffee beans to increase significantly due to poor harvest. Ah well, as much as I like a Latte I can live without it. I quite like that 200 degree place in Tarn.

Is that figure just the ones that are open? I know they’ve announced a few more so perhaps the figure I had is including those too?

Sorry! Really bad phrasing on my part.

I meant the margins are crazy in that coffee costs pennies to product by cup. Crazy as in big.

Possibly. Like I mentioned, their pipeline is strong as they’re double down on their UK expansion plans.

It almost ground to a complete halt at one point pre-COVID. I’ll be honest, I don’t get the obsession myself, but as Marc mentions the Canadians are obsessed with the brand.

What's the profit on beer for a pub or bar?

Varies massively depending on where you buy it from and what your lease agreement is. Could close to 70% margin but could be as low as 50% too.

I thought they had changed it to a subway seeing as there is no sign of intent above ground. If Barnsley council aren't careful and speed it up Network Rail will be pulling out again

The bridge seems a farce, 6 months offsite fabrication, they have been actually on site 2 months nearly and apart from a few small excavations not much sign of life, no footings in fact Glassworks side all the holes seem to have just exposed gas pipes and cables which should have been moved the sewer diversions took nigh on 18 month.

They've got to justify the cost somehow.
As you say, they knew what was coming, why weren't all the utilities done at the same time?

So someone ‘seems’ it to be something and that’s it, conclusions made.

The council have told us it will be finished by ‘late Summer 2023’ so I wouldn’t expect to see much construction or sign of an actual bridge for quite some time - especially with the deck being fabricated off-site. The order of works before delivery of the bridge deck are as follows:
    1. Site set up
    2. Site clearance
    3. Foundations/piling works
    4. Form abutment base and abutments
    5. Pylon delivery and assembly
    6. Pylon installation
The bridge deck will probably take some time to install too because they’ll only be able to do that with railway closures on Saturday evenings and Sundays.

Freddiel, are you sighted on the progress of the footbridge from Pogmoor Recreation Ground to Penny Pie Park? Any news?
