Sorry to bump this but i was talking to someone on the bank holiday and they started off by telling me you had to wear a tie to get into one of the Nightclubs in Wakey years ago.
which very few people wore to go out in.
he said people would turn up and be stopped in the entrance lobby and told they cant come in unless wearing a tie, which after that they were then offered a option of hiring one off them for the night so you could enter the premises
these hired ties turned out to be ludicrously wide grandad patterned kipper ties which obviously wouldn't fit/match with the rest of your attire
which i presume would have been hilarious.

then he went on to say there were telephones on each table and if you saw someone you fancied on one of the other tables you rang that table up !!
at this stage i was trying to work out if he was winding me up or was smashed and was making it all up
its one of those things it sounds so ridiculous it must be true
sounds like a idea that needs to return using cartoon style oversize red dial up phones.

Rooftops was immense. I saw sone brilliant bands there. As you say it’s a long time gone now and what’s left is a shell. They could learn from Huddersfield though which is gradually turning round.

Barnsley looks fantastic and has now become probably the nicest place outside of Leeds in the area. Principally due to a forward thinking Labour administration. It’s not perfect but shows what targeted investment can do

Been to Huddersfield a couple of times recently (was there yesterday actually), and it certainly seems to be thriving. I wonder if this is to do with the ease of commuting to Manchester?

Tiffanys was the only one in the 70’s I can remember that required a tie to get in but once you were in most took it off , used to chuck it out the toilet window so someone else could use it , those kipper ties were in fashion !!! The telephones on the tables I think was in Rooftop Gardens / Casanovas when it first opened , first club I saw them in was Tuxedo Junctions in Newcastle

Do you know or Is it true or is it for better word a urban legend
that men from Barnsley got into a altercation with bouncers there at one time in the long time past
and one of the bouncers ended up getting killed by the men
So that's why its always been very difficult sometimes impossible for people especially groups of lads from Barnsley area to get in the pubs and nightclubs there
    because of that incident

the doorman would always ask where you were from ,after a while and you had been knocked back a few times and caught on you wouldn't get in if you said you were from Barnsley ,you would come up with a place local to wakey or wakey itself
and they would turn round and say
no your not your from Barnsley !! and not let you in.

I know the incident you are referring to and it was a terrible affair and one of the assailants met a violent end himself a few years later ,
However Revellers from Barnsley were scrutinised long before that incident although I dare say it enhanced the situation .

Big Projects take a long time. Rotherham have just spent the best part of 50 million on improvements on the A630. We are currently bidding for projects to start 27/28 with completion not until 30/32. It isn’t a quick process.

Wakefield completed the trinity project about 10 years ago just makes the rest of the city look even more deprived as nothing anywhere else has changed

Unfortunately local govt budgets have been cut and cut by the tories. Trinity was meant to be the start but they just don’t have any more money.

Fair enough i suppose its a sign of the times too, okay building shopping centers but finding retailers to fill them. I imagine it will look more deprived before it gets better.

I love my town but you have to avoid Huddersfield town centre as it's a disgrace. It's full of pound shops, bookies and charity shops. It lacks in a lot of areas and they don't have free parking on a weekend like neighbouring towns do. It's only going to get worse now the council thinks it's a good idea to force retailers like TK Maxx, Boots and others out of town to turn the town centre in to a greener area that for the majority of the year would be too cold to enjoy.
