I am so confused. He wanted out so why has he signed a new deal here? No one seemed to want him this summer and this just makes any deal harder to sort as he now has 3 years left with us.

We probably said he could go on loan as long as he extends so that his sale value is maintained or increased for next summer.

Makes a little more sense than just a non-sale loan.

No surprise. I said it last night. 'Shop window'. He'll go unnoticed if he stays with us.. Potential hefty transfer fee sometime.. Cynical, but seems it's how these owners operate.. o_O

Makes it harder for him to leave though? If his intention is to leave which he states himself this summer then the best thing for him would be to not sign anything new with us.

I mean it is a good thing for us in terms of protecting his value but for him in terms of wanting to leave it surely makes little sense.

Just like Hecky. They will be a clause in his new contract set at a specific price where if a club offers the amount it's easier for Styles to leave us.

It keeps his current wages intact and still on our books , if either we get back in championship or decide to cash in he’s in a higher shop window .
    Good buisness imo .

Suppose that could be the case. I still find it a bit weird. Lets see how it plays out.

I think that’s quite smart by the club, no one’s bid high enough, rather than lose him for less in Jan we’ve added another year to his deal, upping his value, bought ourselves time to either sell him later or keep him, we’ve got his wages off the books for a season, and while on loan in the championship improved his chances of getting more international call ups, which ups his value/experience further

I would never have thought of doing that

Makes sense if we refused to let him go out on loan if he didn’t extend. I suspect that’s the case.

This really is excellent news. A savvy bit of business. Well done Barnsley F.C.

Probably ran out of time to sell, and didn't want to miss out on him going for a free, he gets to continue to play at a higher level, well done the club for doing it and to Callum for signing it. I think he's better then Millwall though.

True. I still don't agree with letting him go so late in the window though as we have no cover now but from our point of view as a club it does protect his value moving forward, just means no immediate sale.

Have to take back my previous criticism on this. Tbf, there was no mention last night of a contract extension, so I can see why people reacted like they did. The extended contract actually flips this entirely for me, from a terrible deal to a really smart one. We slated Khaled last night, so I think it’s only fair now to give him credit where it’s due.

Out of the box thinking. I’ve never seen another club do that before. We’ve protected our investment, kept the player happy and not sold on the cheap.

Loaning him out when Cadden isn’t fully fit isn’t ideal, Helliwell out for a while as well, timing of the window deadline hasn’t helped with that, his wages must be up there to have loaned him out though, it’s expensive cover to keep him here for the few weeks Cadden needs to get fit. Plenty of cover in central midfield now. Makes sense.

The part that intrigues me is Millwall wanted to do a permanent deal yet we refused. Have we got some money from somewhere at the 11th hour. (Not including the Helik sale). Have the owners injected some funds?

Or no club was willing to pay what we asked, so we held our ground, which is more likely I would think.
