First of all, fantastic display and result and fully deserved. I’m ecstatic, but I can’t let that get in the way of an awful referee. How the hell their wasn’t at least 6 Wednesday players booked I’ll never know. The inconsistency between how he treated our players to theirs is nothing short of cheating in my book. COYR
The linesman got me. Ball clearly out for a throw, and he plays on and they get two consecutive corners.
Awful, failed to book Wendy players for repeated fouls and booked our players the first time they put a challenge in. Also failed to play the advantage when Williams was in on goal. Shocking.
I thought he was very poor. Inconsistent. Made some poor decisions that benefitted us too. Didn’t seem to know the advantage rule.
I’m a broken record on this. We are in league one. We were too crap to stay at the higher level. So we will get league one referees every week. Who aren’t good enough to referee at a higher level. Watch match of the day and see the quality of the premier league officiating yesterday (not helped by the pillocks running var) - and these guys are two leagues below their standard! We have league one standard refs because we find ourselves in league one. It’s our own doing.
The point I make is, players of both sides should be treated equally. It’s not about the mistakes, the numerous times he awarded us free kicks for fouls, especially first half and not a hint of a yellow card, yet ours were booked almost instantly (deservedly or not) It is not our fault if the standard of refereeing isn’t what it should be, that is down to the FA
That’s as maybe, but it still doesn’t address the fact players are treated differently and shouldn’t be
Its technically not about their quality of their decisions, its whether the laws are applied equally to both parties. And it rarely is. Mistakes are made every match. Fair enough. But inconsistencies are just incompetence a lot of the time. When the lad in midfield fell over, ref played on. Then said midfielder literally picked up the ball AGAIN, and then the ref gave them the foul. Thats not league one refereeing, that's just weak. Constantly swayed by the crowd too. Its pathetic.
For those of you complaining about the poor standard of third tier refereeing, can I just point out that Josh Smith is SG2 - a Championship referee.
He wouldn’t be good enough refereeing at Athersley’s level for me. Proper play up to the crowd merchant.
I didn't say he was any good, merely pointed out that he is normally and regularly given Championship games. As is Mr Martin, who last week the Ipswich manager deemed unfit to referee his team because he clearly wasn't accustomed to such big occasions as refereeing at Portman Road.
