I can remember my mother telling me when the auld king died in 52 everything closed down. No TVs but all radio channels playing somber music for days on end. Will this be the case this time? Some of you guys talking of no football. I honestly can’t remember what happened when Phil died but I’m sure there will be more mourning this time. I was happily listening to the Hearts game on the radio when all of a sudden off it went and the news of the Queen announced. No return to Tynecastle.
Will be more like Diana's death. Doubt there will be football this weekend and the tv schedule will be wall to wall. Feels like we've just had a load of stuff about her life with the jubilee.
You are probably right , but in this day and age, surely black armbands 2 minutes silence and then crack on would suffice.
Really had my tickets for Saturday the St Leger meeting this will be a huge blow for the town and surrounding area economically the 4 day meeting is the biggest event/meeting of the year huge footfall crowds ,hotels .pubs , shopping etc coming into the area
It will be the only news story for several weeks. Wall to wall coverage between now and the funeral. Biggest news story for a generation at least.
When will they cram the fixtures in? There's already a break for the World Cup. I think cancelling everything just gets peoples' backs up. When you've been to work all week and look forward to your weekend only to have it snatched away because people in the establishment say so. I'll still have to go to work on Monday though.
Cancelled rest of tonight’s races (last three. ) so I’m summising rest of week will be cancelled also
Horse Racing has been abandoned suspended today. Suspended Tomorrow and they will make a decision on Friday about the Saturday meetings St Leger etc.
I don't really understand the sporting fixtures thing - perfect opportunity, with many thousands of people at venues/stadiums to have minutes silences & let them pay their respects.
Fixtures were played on the day of King George VI death, Funeral & day after. A minutes silence & rendition of God save the queen should suffice across the grounds at all weekend fixtures.
I understand it for a day. just a tokenistic thing really. no big deal. might even be enshrined in the London Bridge protocol. dunno. but not sure about any more than that. think that would be a bit much myself.
RFL emailed about rugby saying they will let us know later what’s happening. I never considered it until I got the mail
